Chain or cam belt

Trying to establish if my car is a cam belt or chain driven? 1.4 petrol 2009.

I believe the 1.6 diesel is chain driven Cam but I think the petrol models are a belt? (Wouln't it say in the service schedule book?) If it's a Belt it would probably be in the service book as due for replacement at 100,000kms...

On my Ford all services were listed with what should be done, nothing in the Hyundai manual. The UK reviews suggest chain?

We only get the 2.0 & 1.6 Petrol in OZ (maybe they are different to the 1.4) I would rather it be chain because I don't think they have to be replaced..

Pretty sure ours are belt. I seem to remember reading belt replacement at 90,000 klms and thinking it was an odd figure.
I'll check tomorrow if I remember.

I also have a 2009 1.4 petrol and was told when I purchased the car, it was chain driven?

I have just looked at my Service Schedule and the only mention of a Timing Belt is for the 2 litre model only, which needs inspecting at 47, 500 miles and replacing at 97, 500 miles.

StarSeeker, is your service schedule a separate booklet as it may well be missing from my wallet. I have the service stamp booklet but no mention in there of service items.

The 1.4L Gamma petrol engine is definitely chain cam.

This is also true of the 1.6L gamma used in the UK.

The last cars to ship in the UK with a belt were the beta-engined 2.0D and that was maybe a year ago now.

No m8y, it was basically a checklist (Service Schedule Information sheet) given to me by the garage after they completed my first service. This checklist was specific for a Hyundai i30 petrol, for vehicles on or after 01-01-2008. It showed details of what work or checks they should do on services between 10, 0000 and 97, 500 miles.

Cheers everyone. I have chain driven dohc which I prefer to belt. Unless the chain goes horribly wrong then no expensive belt replacement.

I would ask your dealer to check the engine number to confirm which your car has.

That way you'll know for sure.

Owners should be aware the mileage information (20K intervals) there is not correct for all 1.6CRDi vehicles (roughly pre 2010) depending on build date , and pehaps there are other things that are not correct for other cars pre-dating the document.

Yes, just to add my 2009 model's first service was due at one year or 10k miles, good job its first owner was Hyundai

I thought most cars it was 100,000

My Hyundai "Service Passport" booklet which is in the folder with the Owner's Manual says "Replace the Timing Belt at 90,000 klms (including balance shaftbelt). Or 72 months, whichever occurs first.

If we keep it six years it will probably have only done around 50,000 kms..

(the Tiida had around 25,000 after 3 years)

No need to worry about having to change it so if it goes within the warranty period all costs should be covered by HY.

Thinking out aloud --- If it goes after the warranty is up then it should also be covered by the manufacturer as they have indicated it does not need to be replaced at any time during the life of the car.

Does anyone agree or do you have other views?

Would probably be due to wear and tear on the bearings which would not be covered after 5 years.

Possibly repeating what other people have reported but i asked my dealer when my car went in for its first service about the cam belt or chain.
I was told by the service manager that the 2010 1.4 petrol i30 is chain driven happy days
