Speedo and Tacho are often hard to read in daylight. They are easier to read with the lights on. I propose the instrument lighting be on by default with the ignition (as per the Nissan Tiida and others) as not everyone want to drive around with their head lights on (even though they have auto off function)

I find the trip computer almost impossible to read in bright daylight. It doesn't seem to be adequately shielded from the sun.
Also the intensity control does not allow for the internal lights to be dimmed sufficiently - i like them a lot dimmer than the control will allow.

Does anybody thinking to made a simple electrical wiring to use AUTO light sensor to manage the instruments lightning?

I will do it these days. It will work like this: When the sensor says DARK, then the lightning in the instruments will go via dimmer and when the sensor says BRIGHT the lightning will go directly to 12 V.

What do you think?

I asked my dealer the other day if this problem could be resolved. They thought it might take an adjustment in the car's software. They will lead this question further to the Hyundai importer in the Netherlands (technical department) to see what they think of it.
I will keep you informed about the developments...

Hi M8... as far as I know Hyundai hasn't read this thread and made any changes  (I'm sure it would be fairly easy to relocate the power wire for the instrament cluster so they came on with the ignition....

Strange how you have that option Hemmi? I drive with my lights on all the time (few other do down here though)

Only thing is that dash lights are dimmed a bit when lights are on because it assumes you are driving in the dark (whereas Tiida has dash lights on with ignition - nice and bright)

Only thing is that dash lights are dimmed a bit when lights are on because it assumes you are driving in the dark (whereas Tiida has dash lights on with ignition - nice and bright)

I think this is all a matter of programming, most of the stuff in i30 are probably run through the cars computer or some programmed chip, cars for europe maybe have other defaults than in Aus or Asia.

My moms Peugeot 307 went to service check and the car was run through a computer and updated a software or something, when she  got the car back there were some changes, like for example when she normally left the car the lights were on for one or two minutes, that did not happen after the update, and some other things, she took the car back and found out it was programmed incorrectly.

There must be a way for Hyundai dealers to reprogram the lights behavior.

I assumed that when you said that, you had the facility on your vehicle to select whether the dash lit up or not irrespective of whether the lights were on..

Or am I missing something?

Like others, I find the i30 dashboard overly dark and hard to read in daylight with the lights off - it's especially difficult when you have to concentrate on not going over 30 or 40 mph speed limits there are more speed cameras in the UK than anywhere else on Earth.

I dont remember in what order the options are, I dont have the AUTO ambient option, No need here.

It sound like your car is designed for your local climate, hence the difference. I think the answer is to start driving with the side lights on permanently.

Well the British call it an Indicator stalk (amongst other names) but it's probably called something else in Australia and the US. Car part names do seem to vary a bit in English from place to place... Bonnet=Trunk, accelarator=gas pedal, hand brake=parking brake etc...

Side lights=parking lights=marker lights (low level lights for reduced visibility driving or use when parked)

I thought that in AUTO position it switched all lights on as in the main dipped beam position, you just forget about it. 

Actually no I didn't think I know, my switch is always in AUTO and it controls external lights and dash, so the dash does not illuminate on it's own.

As I mentioned in another thread.. I was driving around with my lights on low beam during the day so my dash was illuminated (and for safety reasons)

When my Philips +80 low beam globes both blew after a couple of months have now opted for just leaving parks on all the time. Apparently these high performance globes are only rated for around 400hours while the original ones are rated for 1200 hours + (I did get free replacements but want them to last a minimum of 12 months considering they cost $80 for the pair)

Aussie cars don't have option to have dash lights on without any others, not on my Feb 08 build SLX anyway.
