What k's does the handbook say they should be replaced?

Where they done?

If not then replace and you should see
 a difference.

Also, you will be experiencing really cold weather now so that may have an effect on the starting of the car.

When was it last serviced?

There have a been a few topics on the board in the past 6-9 months about glow-plugs failing/being replaced - though I think the KMs and i30 ages varied somewhat.

I assume your battery is good. With cold temps I take a while to start myself. I believe the glo plugs remain on even after the light goes out in very cold weather, which is why it starts second go.

Hi Shaz and Welcome. Usually the glo plugs are only replaced if they fail, which is usually indicated by quite a bit of smoke on start up.

Many have high mileage without ever having them replaced while others have needed some or all replaced at 50K or less... Bit of pot luck I'm afraid.

Just search Glo Plugs for some threads... ( I decided not to be lazy...)

Awesome - thanks for the feedback.

I am waiting for one of the reprobates umm... grumpy old f err I mean regular long term members - to point out glow-plugs shouldn't have any spark  :D  Though it is obvious what you were saying.

And it makes sense (at least to me) with symptoms you described - the 2nd instance of waiting for the glowplugs probably allowed that one plug/cylinder to get hot enough to carry the others through - which then warmed up reasonably quickly.

Actually I should have included I was surprised it hadn't happened - after all I replied just under half an hour after the post and some usual suspects were on the forum and looking at the topic  :P
