I wonder whether they gave him a tip!!!!!

and the tip was " thanks a lot, now find your own way home..." 

Considering the guy would have foregone two weeks of earnings + the wear and tear on his cab + fuel I reckon he wouldn't have ended up that far ahead of what he would have earned in NY over a two week period...
