Title: Could today get any worse?
Post by: Shambles on July 31, 2008, 19:56:37
I don't care if it's unfashionable to give your car a name - I love my Fergie, I really do.

Tender, loving care is all she's ever known.

Now, she is in car mortuary. Poor cow.

And it all started when I went to have my new keyfob reprogrammed to the alarm system.

After TWO HOURS the senior engineer came to meet me and showed me the new keyfob. He didn't give it to me - he just showed it to me.

And there was a reason for that.

The reason, as best as I can remember, is that they had to connect to the Hyundai logging system and send my chassis number; in return they received an 8-digit code, which they sent to my electronics system via their notebook. The code should have allowed the new, and the original, keyfob to pair with the radionics.

Unfortunately, it would appear Hyundai sent the wrong 8 digit code. Bummer.

Tonight I have a loan car, courtesy of my dealership.

Fergie?

Well, apparently she panicked and shut down all her electronics. She's disabled the engine management control module, the alarm unit and all related circuitry. She thought she had been stolen.

SHE's TOTALLY DEAD, hence I have the loan car. A Nissan Micra, to rub salt into the wounds.

They're bringing a specialist to my car tomorrow to see what can be done.

And why is it now 8pm local time when I'm writing this? Because I left my house keys on my keyring at the dealership (45 miles away) so had to wait 90 minutes in the Micra for the missus to arrive.

Can today get any worse?

That's no good to hear Shambles!
maybe now we really know why if the car does not have two remote keys, the dealers don't like getting a second one.

My new remote was done in 15 minutes yesterday.

No problems, no hitches, no worries.

And it works all the function.

Don't know what's worst , the car "dying" or having to drive home in a Micra!!!!

Were the neigbours curtain twiching as you drove up your street?
Tomorrow morning you'll best leave for work under the cover of darkness to save your blushes.

You would of expected the loan of another Hy car even the i10 would have been a better option.

Poor shambles.  Have a stiff drink to ease the pain.

Shambles,

Sorry to hear of your predicament.  Kurnya (Australian aboriginal word beening "Poor Bugger".

Now I know why the dealer told my wife not to use the standard spare key until we brought it in and had it reprogrammed as it would cause problems if we tried to use it.  There must be a chip in the that one too.  I suppose if I tried to use it and shoved it in the ignition ouri30 would shut down and refuse to budge.

Should I try?

Bob

Bob - if you're talking about the non-remote key, ours didn't cause any problems when used to start the car, before or after the car's computer was adjusted for it, so I wouldn't worry. I think Shamble's predicament stems from a bum Hyundai code being entered, not from the blade of the key causing problems (as they should both be an identical pattern, whether they're on a remote plipper or not).

Fingers crossed for you today Shambles - these things have a habit of taking longer than you want, so let's hope you don't have to get pushy/angry/aggressive/involve the wife etc, in order for these people to get their collective finger out. Now they've messed your car up they need to bend over backwards to get it back to you today or start thinking about compensation for what should have been a 20-minute job. To answer your original question - yes it could get worse - you might be in the Micra all weekend  :o  ...Good luck mate.

Thanks for all the support. I should know pretty quickly what the score is. If no fix is forthcoming today, I shall insist on a like-for-like loan car until such time as I am reunited with my black pearl.

i30manUK,

Don't be too stressed out.  Dazz has a soft spot for Nissans.  And, so do I, so be careful.

Actually, I like the little Micra.  It's kinda cute.  One of my daughters has a friend whose mother has one, but the friend in question has a soft spot for the i30 we have (I've brain-washered her).

The little Micra does remind me of my first car, the Austin A30, which I have previously mentioned.

Now who's wasting bandwidth?

And Shambles, what's the latest news on Fergie?

Bob

I have just called the dealership. It's still bad news at this time, although I'll give them every due, they do seem to be bending over backwards for me. Can't think why, all they've done is immobilise a customers car when all he wanted was a spare keyfob). Pffft.

"The Specialist" has not arrived and they have been unable to get in touch with him. They have placed numerous other calls with the Technical Dept and are awaiting 2nd, 3rd even 4th opinions (so they say).

It's 12:30 lunchtime and I will give them until 16:00, at which time I will return this Micra and exchange for something that's more of a family car for the weekend. I'm not knocking Nissan (hey, I had one of the original Prairies in 1984) but it just doesn't cut it with the motorway driving I do.

God I'm rrrreally missing Fergie

Looks like his boat's been delayed a bit - but don't worry S, he and his partner (that girl off 'SpringWatch') are on the case and working hard on the solution. You can tell by their expressions...

Well, she's breathing again

After several hours they managed to kick-start the electronics. I think they said it was done remotely. Maybe Hyundai managed the connection, I dunno.

Anyway, I've picked her up and have the spare keyfob, which locks/unlocks (remotely, and using the key) but won't start her. So they've asked for a week to figure out what went wrong and what they can do to sort out the final piece - the immobiliser.

I asked to see the document that was printed out, which allegedly bore the 6-digit code (it was 6 not 8 digits as I reported earlier). Instead, the engy fired up his console and logged into Hyundai's Vin-to-Pin service. Entered my chassis number and up came the 6 digits (PIN) that destroyed my motor. The comment that accompanied it suggested that the PIN was in use on a different Hyundai, which might just account for the cause of the problem.

One last thing.. my display now shows "ESP OFF" all the time. Seems to be a side-effect of what went wrong, or of the restart. I reported it and they've taken a note.

On another note, they've agreed to replace all 4 alloy wheels as the chrome inserts are starting to pitt quite badly. That's only happened in the last 2 weeks. If anyone else has Tech5 FondMetal alloys, check the chrome. I'll take pics tomorrow if needed.

..signed..

A relieved Shambles.

Welcome back Fergie.  My Eye30 is smiling again now his m8 is back on the road.

Keep the RAC helpline number handy just in case you need it over the weekend.

As you do m/way driving INSIST that they give ESP top priority given the Nerds you may come up against on UK roads.

Besides the replacement alloys insist on say a 1st free service (£150), FULL tank of fuel (£70), Full vallet (min £30)
Oh and a set of fuffy dice to hang from your mirror!

Everything eye said!
Shambles do you think  you could attach the  spare key that does not have a remote, could you keep it with the new key fob and use the button to open fergie, then use the spare key to start her?
all this is if you need to give someone the spare key to use?

I just tried that - it works, albeit rather clumsy. Want the plipper to do it tho, by itself

Thanks for your reply & comments John

Shambles, i been thinking, i have been to locksmiths to duplicate new fangled keys, they scan the key you have and duplicate the programing, so would it be possible to do that? like go to a locksmith that has the latest technology to make replacement automotive keys and ask them to scan and tell you what they see on your good key fob, then scan your killer fob find out where Fergies dad went wrong :?:
Cheers John

Hi John.

The key works fine as a physical unit. The remote works fine too. What fails, is the transponder's recognition of the signature the fob returns when starting the car. It's an immobiliser issue right now.

As it stands, my new keyfob does most of what it's asked to do, apart from starting the engine. I must admit, it's a nice sound hearing the bloc turning over (with the whine that the VGT produces) but then having no combustion, kinda ruins the effect.

Am gonna leave it to the "experts" to sort this out. Don't fancy getting the local Gyppo involved  :geek:

Good News m8...

Just shows how something simple can become very complicated...

Also gives us another argument to fight for everyone getting two key fobs....

Shambles,

Do you have an ESP switch on the lower right of the dash (near the instrument light reostat)?

I have, and I can toggle the ESP Off or On with this.

Bob, yes I have. It now comes on or off as I press the button. It stayed on for a 45 mile trip yesterday and a 25 mile trip today, but went off on my journey back home a few hours back. Seems to be behaving normally now (although I don't fancy seeing if all the emergency functions actually work)

Stuff the ESP (says Dazz who was too tight to pay for it...)

I'm more interested in that Pix of Fergie - think that's the finest I've seen her look.... :D

I've been informed (a couple of hours ago) that a new code is now available for Fergie.

I'll be attending the clinic tomorrow afternoon (it's 8pm local time here) to have the virus... sorry... code uploaded.

Should anything bad happen tomorrow, leaving me in the lurch, I will kill someone.
