Engineers are working on a high-tech contact lens that could give soldiers in battle a huge advantage over their enemies. It would superimpose virtual elements onto their view of the real world, like a heads-up display (HUD) – as used by fighter pilots. This would give soldiers extra information such as virtual images, avatars and video feeds from drones.
This combination of virtual elements with a real-world view is known as ‘mixed reality’. At the moment, the system works as a headset like the Oculus Rift – but could slim down to a pair of spectacles within 10 years, and to a contact lens within 20.
