Title: Adding steering wheel volume controls
Post by: pauly on August 18, 2010, 12:56:26
iI have just purchased a I30 cw Trophy edition. This model comes with all the cruise control buttons on one side of the steering wheel.
On the other side is a blank plate where volume controls will fit. I was wondering does anyone have diagrams on volume controls and can i just hook up volume controls where the existing blank plate is ? it is the basic car stereo for an i30.

any input or ideas are appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

It is not an easy job I'm afraid a lot of talk on here (feel free to use the search function above) but not much joy I'm afraid..It is not as easy as plug and play and if you dismantle the steering wheel for a look be VERY careful of the airbag..

thanks for that !
Its dissapointing that a $12000 new getz has volume control on the wheel and bluetooth stereo yet
a i30 misses the basics on a base model !  oh well im still wrapped with my i30 !

Ill  keep looking for a possible solution !

Cheers

give with one hand and take with the other.

That's how they can keep price down by taking out little odds and sods.

why do they call that model a Trophy?
Title: Re: steering wheel volume controls

why do they call that model a Trophy?

I'm guessing they came up with that name because of all the awards the i30 has won john

Like snowcherry I didn't realise it was the SX tarted up with alloys and cruise etc..for only $500 more - not bad  :D

Ok i finally bit the bullet.
I have obtained all the parts necessary to add the volume control.(i hope)

The hyundai dealer is fitting it all for $220.00 labour only. im not stuffing around with an airbag.
I will get photos of the airbag off so i can post them here and hopefully help someone else out.
Its being fitted tomorrow so i hope it all works out ?

I have done alot of research and its apparent people have added volume controls before so here is all the info and photo,s i have on the topic so far.

I hope all these photos turn out as i have never used this PHOTOBUCKET thingy before.

This is the volume module. $59.95 US including air freight from Korean auto imports in america, but the part was shipped(16 days from ordering) direct from Korea.
This part was $177.00 AUS dollars here from Hyundai Parts.

Rear of Volume Module shown.

This is a picture of the wiring loom required for the volume module and also showing it connected.
This part was from Hyundai Parts for $45.00 AUS
(http://i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac185/paul3571/I30%20steering/16092010073-1.jpg)

So Parts numbers are as follows.
96700 2L2004X steering wheel volume module $177 AUD from hyundai australia or $59.00 USD from KAI including $9.95 airfreight.
56190 2L300 Wiring loom for volume module $45.00 hyundai australia.

Tomorrow i find out if it all works ???

Interested to see how you go. I understand that the SX in OZ has a different clock spring (air bag thing) that doesn't allow use of the stereo controls...

Don't understand that. I could have specified steering wheel controls on my SX if I wanted to wait and not take one off the yard.

Good luck (should work) I hope so anyway

Volume Control 100% working.
Happy and well worth the dollars.
brown and blue wires in left plug, horn only function.

right side plug cruise/volume function.

According to Hyundai Dealer any I30 can be fitted with cruise/volume controls(right side plug) (australia) because steering clock springs are all identical.
another photo from my steering wheel in pieces.

The part numbers i have stated here are correct for volume module only.
I have cruise control as well therefore i had the wrong wiring loom for this plug. The hyundai dealer worked out the correct pinout for the right side plug and added volume all into one plug.

Any questions please ask i will try my best.

the final quest !!!!!!!!!!!!

Did you get full funtionality pauly? Mode and track change as well? or just volume up and down?

Thanks for the pix BTW..
Title: Re: Adding steering wheel volume controls
Post by: pauly on September 19, 2010, 11:25:35
umbro the buttons are fully illuminated just like factory fitted! LED,s are internally fitted in the volume module.

Dazzler full functionality is all there everything that factory was designed to do.

Also proves the remote control wires are there all the way from stereo to the clockspring, all you add is the wiring loom and volume module into the steering wheel.

Sorry about the delayed reply and i hope this helps. I am just stoked that its all worked out.
As i said before if i can help anyone else out just drop me a line.  :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

man for a bit more you could get some half deacent aftermarket splits! $150 should get you a pretty good pair! then add a small amplifier and bam would sound nice! even with out an amp it would probably sound better than the factory set up!!!

Hey Pauly,

Thanks for these great posts...well done. Looks like a no brainer to install, provided the air bag doesn't go off!!

You are obviously very happy with the results and based on your success and satisfaction, I'll be getting this done when I get my 15K service done. I might just pay the Hyundai prices instead of importing the gear from Korea/US.

Thanks for the post- might do the same for mine.  What do you mean when you say the dealer added volume into the one plug- did he take out some terminals and put them into the cruise loom?

As for speakers, i wouldn't bother with factory tweeters- better off using some after-market splits, not only will they have better frequency response, but if you choose carefully they will have higher sensitivity and therefore get better volume with less distortion if not using an amp and only going off head unit.
Title: Re: Adding steering wheel volume controls
Post by: pauly on September 21, 2010, 11:50:48
bobbyd

you can only have one plug into the clockspring. i had the wrong loom so they had to put all the pins (terminals) into one plug.
they pulled the 5 pins from the volume cable plug and fitted it to existing cruise plug in the clockspring.

i actually had the wrong wiring loom.
there are 3 looms available.

1.cruise control only, 1 plug either end

2.volume only, 1 plug either end

3.cruise and volume together. with this loom 1 plug to clockspring and 2 plugs (basically a Y cable) to the vol and cruise modules.

Cheers

Thanks Pauly, yeah i got on to a dealer who has the audio controls for $85 and a y loom to suit so organising that at the moment- thanks for your post, i would have not guessed that the steering control could just be added to non factory optioned so easily.  I assumed the loom from wheel to head unit would also be different.

For anyone else wanting to do the same mod- the loom part number is  561502L500 for cruise and audio

561302L300: audio only
561402L400: cruise only

Well i got my controls and loom yesterday and being the impatient person i am i went ahead and fitted it- the steering wheel pulled off by hand, its a pull and the all of a sudden type of action but no puller tool necessary.

The biggest pain was not knowing how to undo the airbag loom, its not a simple plug/unplug of any sort.  Guess they dont want someone removing it and not replugging it in.

So i had to leave the airbag sitting there, which made getting the blanking cover off a bit difficult- you have to unscrew the back of the steering wheel off to get a screwdriver then facing forward to remove the blanking cover and screw the controller in.

But i got it done (took and hour which was longer than i expected but worth it) it all works perfectly, I'm glad Hyundai maintain a loom from the clock spring to the head unit for all models including the SX

Anyone needing advice pls let me know

I did previously see that thread/link and i signed up but never received membership in order to download, perhaps they don't like any non US subscribers??  Has anyone else managed to subscribe and download from there???

Agentr31- its worth the time and $$ for this mod, a cheap investment, the controls look good (especially at night), are functional (good to keep your hands on the wheel and a selling point to later on) and not expensive by any means.

I priced up a top box (glove box above the head unit) as part of my install- going to put a centre speaker there- it came in at $240 just for that, so $85 plus loom for the steering wheel audio control is cheap.

I'm going to use mine to house a centre speaker (actually a 4 inch mid and 2 inch tweeter- so 2 speakers) so i wanted another to keep in order to restore it to original one day, came across a fascia and storage compartment from a local wreckers for $120, but i was just comparing the price of that to the steering wheel controller to point out this is a good value for $$ mod in my opinion.

On a side note i just found a workshop manual on CD from USA ebay and ordered it, hoping its a decent quality and the $40 will be worthwhile.  Keep you all posted on that

Yes well that has been my previous experience, doing an install and then selling the car with all the mods in it at a massive loss. No one wants to pay much more than market value for a car regardless of what's been spent on it.  So this time around I'll make it all removable and have the ability or at least the option of getting it back to standard or close to it. But with this install it requires cutting the radio fascia and top storage compartment, maybe the boot trims etc, so I've gathered duplicate parts in order to do that.

And hopefully i can get an adapter to allow the Alpine head unit to hook up to the steering wheel audio controller !!  It should be possible.

Title: Re: Adding steering wheel volume controls

I can take a photo if you need but all clock springs have the directions on there- you turn it all the way clockwise til it stops, then turn 3 turns anti clockwise and continue a little until the alignment marks meet up (little arrows).  Then the steering wheel can go back on and the loom plug on the clock spring will be up the top.

I worked out the airbag loom- at the back of the airbag (not the clock spring side of the loom) use a small flat head screwdriver to pull the yellow section of the plug out a little, the plug will then pull off the airbag and this makes it heaps easier to get the wheel off etc and put the audio controls on.

I'm out of time but anyone wanting more info or photos i can post up next week- right now im off for long weekend holiday, hope everyone else as a great weekend !

Hi

I am considering the purchase of an i30 manual diesel wagon with factory cruise, but there are seemingly none in Australia. I'm told by one dealer they can take the base model manual diesel wagon and add a factory cruise module; if I pay for them to take the wheel off I may as well have the radio controls added as well. Do you mind sharing what the correct loom part number is if there is a cruise control module in place as well? Thanks.

Well done. Can I assume the battery is disconnected before removing the steering wheel?
Title: Re: Adding steering wheel volume controls
Post by: bobbyd on October 17, 2010, 12:41:05
Ensure steering wheel is straight.  Yep, disconnect battery, remove hex screws on the side of wheel.   Pull out airbag and disconnect the air bag and horn looms.  (airbag loom has a little yellow sectino which needs pulling out using a flat blad screwdriver before the rest of the loom unclips)

Undo the steering wheel nut (easiest with a rattle gun and socket) Pull steering wheel off so you can take backing trim off wheel.  Then you can unscrew blanking cap and screw back in the audio control.  Be careful how you route the audio/cruise loom otherwise it will push on the backing trim.  Set the clock spring according to instructions on the spring yellow label.

Put steering wheel back on and tighten nut + washer with rattle gun til firm.  Put airbag loom and horn loom back on and place airbag back into wheel.  Refit hex screws into sides and vwala !!  Hope that all makes sense.

Post by: agentr31 on October 17, 2010, 12:44:38
rattle gun!!!

another tip, DONT undo the nut right off... leave it on 2 or 3 turns then bang the wheel on the sides and pull it off the splines

the reason for this is, sometimes the wheel gets "stuck" on there and when you remove the nut right off and start reefing on the wheel what happens...

FACE FULL OF FAIL!! thats right you get a face full of steering wheel...

hey dazz want a switch, works perfect! brand new condition!!!!!! never had power to it!

nah j/k

thanks to my dad *agent tips hat to him* we/he discovered it DOES INDEED WORK!!!

the problem is the clock spring... you see there are two rows pins in the connector you use to gain steering wheel controls, IN MY CAR the clock spring connector only has one row, BUT and there is a MASSIVE BUT

the connector has spaces for 12 pins (obviously for horn, cruise, volume, and bluetooth phone) of which you can only have 2 options...

my clock spring only has 4 pins in it, the same number as the new steering wheel control... so for me to "rearange" the wiring WILL WORK

BUT i actually need 5 pins... 4 for the control and an earth for the horn

so i can make this work at no extra cost just by installing a seperate switch for the horn and moving the connectors around that plug into the clock spring...

but i dont want to do that just yet... i mean im not driving an XF faclon with a faulty horn that has required me to "just put a switch in"

so im going to price up a new clock spring... hopefully its cheap...

once ive got everything sorted ill do a write up, i have all the photos plus some...

wow... looks like i just wasted $200... my clock spring is different... it only has the lower row of connectors... so to put it nicely "im f#%73d"

Ahhh, i did see a basic clock spring at a wreckers, obviously base model not suited to cruise or audio control from the early models.  You could take clock spring out, see if the full set of connectors in the loom attached and maybe put the optioned clock spring in if you can find one cheap another.  I know retail they are $250 and wreckers should be $120.....?

Good to hear mate.

On another note- when i fit the audio system to my car, to get the converter to allow the i30 controllers to work the Alpine head unti it will cost me $340- what a rip off.

Thanks to all in this forum for the helpful tips. I'm surprised (and disappointed) that almost every Hyundai dealer I've contacted says "no it can't be done" even when you point them to the helpful step-by-step instructions found here. I think it would be a great resource if those who HAVE found dealers to do this share the contact details (I may be close and will advise if it's successful). As far as I can tell, we so far only have Liam at Bunbury Hyundai and Volkswagen (08) 9791 4210 as a dealer resource.

As an aside, this link on our forum is a another even more detailed step-by-step. Perhaps an admin can merge the two discussions:

ignore the dealer, and just order the parts... or try a bigger dealership mate!!

you will probably find they dont want to help you because, most dealers wont take back electrical things after you have bought them and opened them (incase you shorted it out and broke it)

they just dont want to do a special order, then have you coming back after you have bought the stuff demanding a refund because it doesnt fit/work and they cant gaurantee it!
