G'day all,

Traded my 2005 Mercedes 180K for a Hyundai i30 Active X just before Xmas and haven't been happier. What a great little car this i30 is. A strange thing happens though whenever I've filled up and restart. The display of Litres/100k can show 30 litres/100k and when I drive off, this figure reduces in increments of 2 or 3 every 20 seconds and stops on about 6lt/100km. When I first had the car the display registered 4.9 -5.3 litres/100k but now it's all over the place.  I've reset the readout and it's counting down from about 6.7lt/100km which I presume will continue to decrease as I do more kilometres. Anyone else experience this problem and can explain it?

My cars have done the same. After stopping to refuel the engine loses temperature and the car uses much more fuel when accelerating away from a stand-still.

The high fuel consumption s more noticeable immediately after refilling because the the distance is reset to zero and the average economy is literally the same as instant. As you travel further,  the average economy improves because the distance travelled is greater and when the car is up to speed the economy is better which improves the average the further you travel.

It usually takes mine half a tank or so to stabilize, by the next refuling its been spot on every time compared to pump-to-pump measurements. Wish it had one more decimal though.

Mines never been as bad as 30l/100km though, worst ive seen is about 7, and falls under 5 within 10km.

Is your a brand new one? Diesel? If so it will probably start to stabalize after 10k km.

No the petrol always uses more fuel than the Diesel. 5 is pretty good IMO.
