the most ever amount of users on line was 331 on Friday 17th, and i missed it  because of a Christmas work party.    what was the reason for the mass invasion of users?

Some sort of attack by bots apparently (heaps of guests from know spam IP addresses) I think that is how Shambles explained it.. so you didn't miss much..

Never nice to be "attacked", as I believe we were, almost certainly.

We get quite a few spambots [mostly from Asia] hitting our forum and consuming our bandwidth, but the moderators keep on top of it. In the case in question we were hit via multiple proxies throughout Europe & Asia using preconfigured links to various sub-boards within a 20 minute window. That's what hit us so unexpectedly and so heavily, but we caught and stifled it
