Next week, with the next tank of fuel, I intend to keep records of the following:

At 50 km intervals record
1. Average Fuel Consumption (l/100k), since filling up.
2. Distance to Empty
3. Trip Meter reading + Distance to Empty

As the week progresses, I shall update a table in a single post for all to see.  I do around 142km per day, so there should be an update each day.

I shall then graph the results at the end of the week and post them on this thread.

If anyone else wants to do the same, feel free to join in with your own records and/or comments on the postings, please join in.

Bob

Trip Computer Record
Started on 10th April after filling up.

This record will be updated throughout the week.
I am doing it for my own interest, mainly to see how the Distance to Empty adjusts itself throughout the period as the tank gets closer to empty.

Majority of my travelling is done on gently undulating to flat roads, with small country towns on each end of the trips.  Speed limits are 100 kph and the towns are 50 kph.

Please note that the l/100k and the Av.Kph were not reset every 50km.

good idea Bob. would also be a good idea to add what speed you were averaging in the 50 k interval, and what conditions were like temp and if it was flat or hilly country.
the info you gave me about filling up was great thanks, i filled up with tank gauge reading at 1/4 full i kept watching the foaming in tank waited for it to go down then kept toping up till it was full, the warning light had not come on and gauge read 1/4 but i got 42 liters in it. next weekend i should be doing a 800k round trip with mountains to cross twisty hilly country and some flat and straight road, will do a separate post as no trip pc. will fill before i leave and will fill at same pump when i get back and will fill all the way up both times. will get the 1,000 service during the week. will find out if ok to use mineral diesl oil  tomorrow then i'll change the oil as have plenty of 10w 40w turbo diesel mineral base oil. and would like to do at least 15,000 befor useing fully synthetic so i get a good seal with the rings.
John i'll change my oil every 5,000 till the 15,000 if i find its ok to use mineral oil

Hi all,

I have decided to post the remainder of the results on the Hyundai-Forums rather than try updating in two places all the time.

Here is the link.  http://www.hyundai-forums.com/t26508-accuracy-of-on-board-computer-readings.htm

Results have also been graphed for those of you who a visual.

Hi All,

In the transfer of posts to the new site, a few things were lost (like links).  To complete the record for this experiemnt, I am going to double post the information from the Hyundai-forums here as well.

At this stage I emptied a 10l Jerry can of diesel in the tank.

Completed on 21st Apr 08

Comments:
870km is the maximum Distance to Empty I have had after filling up.
Note the overall distance for a tank (calculated by adding the Trip distance to the Distance to Empty) was stable at 870km up to just under 300km. From then on it has increased at a reasonably constant rate, gaining approximately 25km every 50km.

Over 1000km, the gradual consistent gradient of the figures began to level off (see graph) and I then felt I could see the point I would have to fill up.

From 1100km I decided to take readings every 10km. The fuel light came on with 116km to empty, and the total trip distance was able to be calculated at around 1260km.

I had decided to take a Jerry can of diesel with me as I knew I could well be between towns when the tank needed a little extra. I found it interesting that the Distance to Empty stopped registering an amount around 50km to go. I didn't want to take the chance of having air get in the fuel system, so I stopped and added 10l of fuel to the tank. It then registered that I had 254km to empty.

At the completion of the experiment, the trip computer showed 4.6l/100k. for the 1230km. I could possibly have reached the 1270km, but I didn't want to take the chance.

Hope someone finds these figures and the graph of interest.

Bob

Having done all the hard work with the trip computer, I am finding a few interesting things that throw the whole thing into confusion.

On filling up following the experiement, the DTE registered 905km.  I had suspected previously that the DTE seems to be adapting itself over time.  Could it be that as the car is driven more and the fuel consumption figures are built up in the memory (fuel usage history) of the computer, DTE becomes more realistic.

Also, during the experiment, the DTE + Distance travelled remained at 870km for approximately 300km, then began to rise steadily until we had travelled 1100km when it levelled off and became a better prediction.  Now, I have already noticed that the DTE + Distance travelled has begun to adjust itself after just under 200km.  Again, could the computer be building up more data in the computer memory and thereby able to provide better predictions.

Only time will tell, I guess.

As I said to my wife, the display of DTE will be interesting if the prediction ever gets above 999km as that is the highest allowed on the display.  She got confused when we had travelled 1000km and Trip meter rolled over.

Lakes,

I think it is safe to say you have 100k to go when the light comes on.

It is kind of unusual to have a small car with a small tank able to go such long distances between refilling.  Will be great on a long trip.

Diesel prices:  Wife paid $1.725 per litre for Diesel today when she filled up (Murray Bridge, SA).

Thank's Bob, i agree they have a great range for a small tank.
when i left friday the local inipendent that sell's mobil ( remember me on about BP :D ) WAS SELLING AT $1.69 HE IS ALWAYS 5 TO 10CENT Cheaper. but all down the south coast diesel was $1.80 and up have not checked sydney prices yet as used M7, M2 to get home and no servo's on those motorway's, so if you ever drive to sydney be warned have fuel when you use any motorways as only one has a servo on it, don't ask me why this is ( bad planing?)
cheers

don't seem to efect me as i have never seen temp below 10C yet but i'm sure it is worth doing if there is that much difference in economy.

Dazz anything that restricts airflow through the intercooler would help warm up the air charge
