Seems to me like a lot of "tech" that can go very wrong, when you least expect it. Only for 4WD cars, obviously, but the more they add the more can fail.

How the hell can you get a wheel with a drive shaft attached to turn 90′?

No shafts - just put an electric motor in each wheel. Simples.
