Title: Aldi cops backlash after advertising 'inflammatory' Australia Day shirts

January 08, 2014

SUPERMARKET chain Aldi has announced it will remove a range of t-shirt designs after copping backlash over advertising "inflammatory" and culturally insensitive Australia Day shirts in its latest catalogue and online.

Users on social media called for the shirts, designed with a slogan that reads "Australia est. 1788", to be pulled from stores after deeming it profoundly racist.

The shirts are advertised on the Aldi website and through its catalogue.

I thought the Germans were made of sterner stuff.  These minority groups p..s me off.

'Culturally Insensitive,' that's a new one.  Replaces racist I suppose. :whistler:

Now without being 'culturally insensitive', imagine if the Spanish Conquistadores had 'invaded'  Terra Australis in 1788 instead of the English?  Look what the Spanish did to most countries in South America, Peru in particular.

Perhaps the Aldi T shirts should have had the words 'HM Colonies - 1788.'  imprinted thereon.

I'll have one, anything to stick one up the 'twitter' brigade who think that because they can get a few people to join them on a crusade their opinions mean something......Here's an idea, just because you have the time to waste, and a Twitter account it doesn't make your opinion any more valid.

Love that Quote from Mr Fry.....

Not so fast, Dazz. The name "Australia" was formally adopted in 1824, however references to the name go back as far as the 16th century. That's three reasons the Aldi shirt is wrong.

How did Australia get its name (http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_did_Australia_get_its_name)
