Title: 2.2L R engine swap in i30 ??
Post by: Rouge on December 14, 2016, 06:40:18
Have had a google about but not come up with an answer...
Does anyone know if 2.2L R will drop into FD or GD 1.6 CRDI i30?
Gearbox difference?!
Might be fun..... :Jaw:

I have absolutely no idea as I'm about as mechanical as an icecream.
But I agree, it would be fun.   :D

Nice idea, but even if it fitted and could (somehow) be connected to the rest of the drivetrain everything else would need upgrading to cope with the extra power. I don't know of anyone who has done this and I suspect it would not be financially viable.  :Pout:

Not knowing what or if the 2.2L R is a hyundai engine couldn't tell you,I know next year in England, the new German designed I30's are going to have seven engine options and if it's power you want they will be getting a 238bhp mid year 2017 and six other engine choices which I doubt we'll see out here.

The 2.2L R-Engine is a 4-cylinder all-aluminum (block and cylinder head) unit, with chain driven dual overhead camshafts operating 4-valves per cylinder. Fuel is supplied to the unit using Bosch 3rd-generation common rail direct injection (CRDi) through piezo-electronic injectors operating at 1800 bar, with air being fed through an electronically managed variable geometry turbocharger and an advanced engine control unit (air system-based charge control).

Bore and Stroke are 85.4 mm (3.4 in) x 96.0 mm (3.8 in) for a total displacement of 2199 cc.

It generates 147 kW (200 PS; 197 hp) of power and 440 N·m (325 lb·ft) of torque.

As with the 2.0L version, for reduced vibration and lower booming noise, the R gets a lower balancer shaft which is encased in a stiffened ladder frame housing for increased rigidity. Weight saving features include a serpentine belt with isolation pulley, a plastic head cover, plastic intake manifold and plastic oil filter housing.

To achieve Euro 5 emission compliancy, the R is fitted with a close-coupled Diesel particulate filter plus highly efficient exhaust gas recirculation with by-pass valve.

It is fitted to the 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe (2nd-Generation/Santa Fe The Style in Korean Market) and 2009 Kia Sorento (2nd-Generation/Sorento R in Korean Market)The 2.2L is also used in the 2015 Hyundai Grandeur,[1] 2010 Carnival/Sedona in the Korean market and in some markets in the 6th-generation Hyundai Sonata.

Hi Daz,
You are also describing the 2.0L motor that is in our (Aust) ix35.
From my reading it is the same 2.2L used in the Euro i30.
Because of the extra power it has a dual mass flywheel.
Hmmmm...A trip to the wreckers would confirm this and could start a whole new adventure.
The last ix35 motor I bought (near new) cost me less than $2000.
Cheers G

What 2.2L in the Euro i30..?  We only get a 1,6L CRDI around here. The FD was offered with the 2,0 CRDI from the Sonata. 140 HP/305 NM.

Yes thinking as I write.  I have only heard of the big motor in the Euro FD.
The CRDi ix35 has an auto transmission.
The 2.2R used in the Santa Fe has auto or manual.
Still an interesting project and on the face of it, quite do-able. ...I think

Hi Gary,

The early FD i30 was released in Europe with a 2.0 Crdi as well as the 1.6 Crdi. It was an older belt driven design and was dropped after a year or two. It was a bit gutsier than the 1.6 but slightly less reliable.
