Nice detective work, mjt. I look forward to your early morning readings.

9 hrs later, the ambient is 22 degs. The roof of the car is 17 degs. Under the left guard it's 21 degs, the reading in the car is 22 degs.

So, looks like it's fairly good.

I wouldn't get too carried away by any static temp readings. It's there to warn of possible ice conditions on the road and as information while driving. As far as I know, hoar frost or steering freezing up (read that as control surfaces)  is not something drivers need to worry about like our aviator members.

I always get a giggle when I say "Hoar Frost".   :P  The others ones aren't as funny, Clear Ice and Rime Ice (boring)!!

I've experienced Clear and Rime Ice before, not much fun.  :(

I think I remember reading somewhere that 1 inch of water on Piper wings = about 4 tonnes of weight, or in other words, uncontrollable crash.  :(
