So..overall, what are the prices like comparing them to the "old" i30?

I know it's unfair to compare, because of the equipment, but still?

I'll let the diesel owners reply about that but I see that the 1.4 petrol style nav is about the same price as the 1.6 Premium with Sport pack bodykit and wheels was in 2008.  Now the Premium came with leather seats, front heated seats, auto lights which the new one does not have, but the new one has the flex steer, built in reverse camera/sat nav, built in side repeaters in the mirror housing.  The car now also has 6 speed box, where the original ones all had 5 spd, recognising of course that 6 speed came in during it's life. In the UK we now have the Triple Care for 5 years rather than 5 yr warranty with one year roadside assistance, so that is also worth more.

So 200cc less in the engine, no bodykit and a couple of other things taken away with a couple of things added in equals the same price.  Given that the bodykit was worth about £1000 and a 1.4 engine is probably about £500 cheaper than the 1.6, then the other parts taken away perhaps comes to £2000, making the new one £16k.  Add in the flex steer option and media pack and you are possibly looking at adding the £2k back on. 

My verdict - better car, with better warranty care for the same price as you would have paid for the equivalent model 4 years ago.  Given that inflation is currently and has been higher in the past 4 years than expectations of everybody, we should be expecting to pay more than the price point it has been put at surely?

Still a bloody good deal IMO.

so about $25.000 for a base model crdi in oz.  that's fairly close to what you'll pay for the old shape at the moment.

I have added some old model prices to my original post. It is difficult to make direct price comparisons because the feature list for various models differ as Bumpkin has mentioned.

My take on the price hike applied to the new 2012 car is that the model I am interested in seems to have increased in price by about £1000.

The current !.6 CRDi Premium with ISG is being superceded by the 1.6 CRDi Style.

I don't have a price list newer than July 2011 when the Premium car with ISG cost £17,950. The new 2012 Style model costs £18,995 (or £19,295 with the 128PS engine).

The current car had leather facings on the seats, an auto dipping rear mirror, a trip recorder that showed the fuel economy numerically, single zone climate control, One touch down front windows, 17" alloys with a full size spare.

The new car has none of those, the wheels are 16" alloys with a space saver spare. The leather seat facings can be had only as one part of an option pack costing £1000.
It has flex steering, enhanced stability control, bluetooth, Auto defog windscreen, dual zone climate control, a crude bar graph to show fuel economy, LED indicators in the mirrors, daylight driving lamps, front parking sensors, one touch up/down on all 4 windows and auto dipping headlights.

Hence the new model is better equipped for the extra price. In my opinion - because I am not a fan of leather seats - it is better value for money than the outgoing model.

I suspect however - that the 1.4 petrol model lacks the same value for money but is difficult to compare because there never was a 1.4 petrol premium model for me to compare with
