Title: Spray painting the dash console
Post by: tzwientjuh on February 22, 2009, 15:31:51
As most of the i30 owners here, the dash console is silver painted. As for me it ain't. It's just black. So I spray painted mine :p

Took out the console, fairly easy.

Took out the controls, just 4 screws
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n87/tzwientjuh/DSC02539.jpg)

The console itself
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n87/tzwientjuh/DSC02540.jpg)

Offcourse clean it up or else the paint would be ruined

Painting

Result. The side lines didn't go a straight as they should be but I know this would happen. I just need to remove the paint wihout damaging the plastic. I tried and managed to remove the paint :) but it is a time consuming job!  So I'll keep busy this evening. :)

Airflow and heating module back in

Haha I know :D But it doesn't bother me ;) Maybe I can apply a small sticker
Just prayed the final layer. I'll let it dry overnight and install it back tomorrow.

Took out the console, fairly easy.

Where did you start when removing the centre console?

I think I'll remove mine as the hazard lights have a permanent +ve 12V that I need, but a couple of tries earlier today I couldn't see an easy way of removing the console cover without damaging it

There are four crews in the ... 'top thingy' (where the piglet is on in my car)
2 In the front
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n87/tzwientjuh/picture1od9.png)

and 2 in the back under the rubber.

On this image they use a plat metal to pull it out. I did not because I think it will damage the plastic. So I tried to get a grip on the 'top thingy' And just pulled it out. It's hard ... but possible. Did this more than once and never damaged something.

Then there is one screw left. Unscrew that.

Then pull the dash up and towards you. Do not do it slowly as that will break it. Just a small pull, I know it's hard and scary but it's the only way :s
I did this 3 times before and still no damage ;)

When the top is loose,  pull a bit more for the whole dash is loose (easy) And unplug it also easy ;)

Remove screws to remove the radio unit. Then slide it out and unplug the wires
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n87/tzwientjuh/picture7cz7.png)

Voila

Wow! That is a mod I would like to do. But only if I wasn't so prone to mess up everything  :'(

I just said 'What the heck, I'll do it'

And look at the result :D
I know things can be messed up but here nothing or maybe little things can go wrong. use the instructions to remove the panel and you should be fine ;) Use a good quallity spray and just spray the thing. Or let someone else do it ;)

Maybe your next job should be moving the steering wheel over to the right side, which is the correct side.

My wife likes the stuffed toy.

No it's not, Left is the correct side.

RHD is safer... From wiki;

Research in 1969 by J. J. Leeming showed countries driving on the left have a lower collision rate than countries driving on the right. It has been suggested this is partly because humans are more commonly right-eye dominant than left-eye dominant. In left-hand traffic, the predominantly better-performing right eye is used to monitor oncoming traffic and the driver's wing mirror. In right-hand traffic, oncoming traffic and the driver's wing mirror are handled by the predominantly weaker left eye. Some countries that have switched to driving on the right, such as Sweden, have seen their collision rates increase out of proportion to the increase in traffic volume.
