Waxing (to wax or to not wax, that is the question...)

After searching the web for recommendations on a good wax, I noticed
that quite a few people recommend NOT to wax a car that has a clear
coat finish.

I assume that our i30s have clear coat.

So, is waxing necessary?  If yes, what wax do you use?

Hi...

Search for Meguiars and/or Autoglym on here (Search button at top of page) and you should get all the info you need. :goodjob:

Edit: my personal view is that with a clear coat a regularly garaged and washed car doesn't need much if any waxing but it does make removal of grease and bird lime easier...

Now that will get some discussion going :winker:

Ohh Dazz, so many assumptions in one post

Might have to start a poll, but I wonder how many of our members actually a) Have a garage and b)actually use it for storing their car rather than all the junk you have no room for in the house!!

I would also say it depends on where you live as to whether the clear coat is enough, I like to protect the clear coat with wax, I like to think that the wax goes some way to protecting the clear coat from the harsh erosion of salt/sand mix which is "supposed"( different argument! ) to be used on our roads in the winter.

I also think that it depends on the quality and thickness of the clear coat used, it is a fairly common criticism of the Hyundai range that the paint is as thinly coated as possible, so one must assume that the clearcoat is the same, therefore a layer or three of wax will do no harm.........

On top of all that, I hate to see rain streaking on my car bodywork, I love the beading of water, indicating that the wax is doing it's job which as you say also makes washing (and drying) much easier :goodjob: :D :D

Anyone tried this?

Leery of polish? Try the Appleton solution.
# Try this tip from Bob Appleton of Hewlett, New York, who was kind enough to share it on an Internet car blog. There appears to be no downside to this trick. After washing and preparing the surface and then applying wax to your car, fill a sock halfway with corn starch and tie a knot at the top of the sock. Holding the knot, lightly smack the starch ball every 18 inches or so around the waxed surface. Lightly rub the powdered remains of the corn starch with a clean cotton cloth. The corn starch acts like jewel rouge used to polish glass. Finish by hosing the car off and you're done.

BTW. I realised I didn't know the difference between polish and wax. Never used wax and polish only sparingly (and never in the first year of a new car). Thank God for Google.

Thanks for the recommendation.

I'll try to find somewhere in Beijing that stocks Meguiars or Autoglym.  If worse comes to worst, I'll pick up a bottle of TurtleWax (which I've seen in the local department store/supermarket).

I'll also wait until it gets a little warmer.  I washed my car a couple of weeks ago and the water froze before I could chamois it off.

If looking at Turtlewax, the Platinum series (green and silver bottles) has won awards from the motoring press :goodjob:

I believe that it is absolutely necessary to protect your paintwork by the regular application of a wax or sealant.
Hyundai paint is quite thin - we know this through experience -

Here are my tools of choice -

Very important to follow best practices in caring for your paint. We use ChemicalGuys Citrus Wash&Gloss to wash our cars, together with a chenille washing mitt, then dry off with Microfibre cloths. This will greatly reduce introducing swirls to your paintwork.
I currently use a very expensive wax called Wolfgang Fuzion to wax the i30. Gives it a great shine and good protection. Although in a wax test i conducted using 50 different waxes, i came to the conclusion that the best value for money wax is called DP Max Wax which costs about $40.

If you do not protect your paint with a wax or sealant, your cars paintwork will fade and the clearcoat may start peeling after just a few years. Lots more to write on this subject eg my favourite is now Chemical Guys Jetseal 109 Sealant to bring out the best shine on your paint - as well as great protection.

A good wax after a good polish can only help your car. I wax mine up to 4 times a year, remember wax is NOT polish, it won't take off the clear coat, it olny covers it to protect the polish longer.

I waxed mine today for the first time, also gave it a bit of a clean.....but not a full one. I am quite particular when it comes to my rides, I used to have my own car detailing business, which kept me busy.

Anyway I thought I would throw up some pics trying to capture the shine.

cheers

Ralph, People who are not into polishing and then waxing their car would probably not realise how hard it is to obtain a highly reflective appearance on white paint.
Your paint looks sensational.
