I have just purchased an i30 CRDi Auto 5door which is running on Hankook tyres.The road noise is horrendous,it drums in your head on most road surfaces.I am at the moment in discussion with the dealer to replace these tyres.Has anyone else experience of this problem.

  is it a new shape or did you buy a 2nd hand FD model?

The FD was quite noisy the new shape GD is better.. There are several threads on here about sound proofing (not very successful) and replacing with quieter tyres which does help a bit.

There is a Model of Continental tyre which makes a noticeable difference. I will add a link here to the best threads if I can find them.

is the car new or second hand.
If the latter, there may well be an uneven wear pattern on the tyres - possibly from a previous alignment issue.
However, those tyres are pretty noisy even if new.
There has been plenty of discussion on here about just that. Look in the "Tyres/Wheels" section.

Are they at the correct pressure?

why not pop up to Solihull and try my 2013 i30 Tourer on which I have recently changed the Hankooks to Dunlop Sport BluResponse after much investigation on tyre noise.  I have a decibel meter which enables you to get a fairly accurate noise level comparison.

Its a lot better but short of my hopes

My original kumho front tyres got steadily worse and even sounded 'square' due to uneven wear from a 4mm toe-out misalignment. After 55000 km, I got a good deal on the newer equivalent Kumhos and I'm very happy to be back to relative silence.

The same installer raved about the Conti5s and showed me some regularly spaced bridges on the tread pattern as a feature of German sound reduction engineering. I might try them next time around but I'm in no rush.

Well, Ruby is hard on her shoes IMO. We have uneven wear on the fronts and I'm not too happy about this at all. The Conti reading here is good, but what if I can't get the uneven wear sorted, expensive tyres to toss away.

Being toe-out, my wear was all on the inside edges. Maintaining zero alignment angle and sedate cornering are the solution apparently.

I know you guys have  :Pdiesels, but I definitely corner hard and don't have uneven wear issues ie. "sedate" isn't in my dictionary    Just the 15" Hankooks wore out (pretty evenly) in 28,000 klms.
The replacements are up to 67,000 klms (so, almost 40K on them and just about half worn). The alignment was checked but not adjusted when they went on and never since.
