Nice shades

Nothing like cheap BigW glasses. I can't justify spending big money on cosmetic things. They had cancer council approval so I was happy.

What service and how much was the quote?

I have a pair of Erroca's that I have had for ages; I got them from a friend who is a bartender that said some foreigner forgot them there. The lenses are awful though but they still work and sit very comfortably.

It is the 165K km service, but I am having it done at 170K km as the dealer I bought the car from had it serviced for me at an independent service agent at 155K km when I purchased it. They are charging me R2500, or AU$250 give or take (parts and labour).

I don't mind doing the services myself, but I would like to have a full service history on the car. If they keep on charging me these prices though I am going to have to make another plan.

It ended up at R1769.45, so call it A$177.00.

The gasket was R5.94, oil filter R67.56, windscreen fluid R14.73, then a 'consumables' charge of R100, R271.92 worth of 15W-40 oil, and R30 for the environmental charge. Add 1.8hrs of labour which amounted to R1062.00 to bring me to the subtotal of R1552.15, exculding sales tax.

They said that my rear brake pads were shot, I needed new wipers and both my parklight bulbs were blown but these parts I will do myself when I have the cash available. Strange, I rotated my tyres about 2500km ago and the rear pads looked in great condition still. The wipers I could see are a bit worn and the parklight bulbs I am not going to worry about now :goodjob2:

EDIT: Forgot about the R10 in change that went missing from my ashtray when it went in for the service so add R10 to the total :whistler:

I wish I could get a service at the dealer for that price, then I would consider not doing it myself.

15W-40 oil... Why use such a thick oil for such a new engine...I would use 5W-40.

I was expecting a price more to the lesser side of R1000, but labour adds a lot of the total cost - A$59 an hour (I wish I could earn that :D)

Most oils here in SA are either 10W-40 or 15W-40, anything else is very scarce and pricey. I am going to consider going to maybe a thinner cold temperature oil once I hit 200K km, as I am a bit worried of oil struggling to get to the top of the engine in the mornings. If I recall correctly, the Gamma engine doesn't have hydraulic tappets but conventional bucket and shim tappets instead?

Since Hyundai lost my service booklet I cannot see when they are due for an inspection, but I presume they are supposed to last the lifetime of the engine?

Compared to Aust you got off pretty cheap. My dealership charges $110 an hour.
On the other hand 1.8hr to do a basic oil and filter service is about 0.8hr too long.

Crap, well I guess where our dealers are cheaper their efficiency is lacking...I swear they added the time they took to vacuum and wash the car and added it on...but who am I to argue?

But as you said, how long can it take to do the following:

Warm up the engine
Pull out the sump plug, drain the oil
Change oil filter
Put new gasket and sump plug in
Add oil

Half an hour perhaps? And the other inspections should not take longer than 45mins at most, it was just a quick visual inspection and removal of the wheels to check the disc and pad wear.

Anyways it is done and dusted, I can hopefully go another 5 months before my next service :)

I get the feeling that you're going to be astonished by this machine. Bringing it to Oz after refining the earlier versions overseas means it will hit the market with the bugs already sorted out.

I N V U   :blubber: :blubber: :blubber:

You realise that there is going to be a day for test driving the car and getting paid for it, too, you lucky ba*****.

Congrats on #5  :hatoff:

Thanks. I sure am loving it.

I don't think we will be driving them while I'm here. But guaranteed the first one in Coffs I'll be finding a quiet corner and spending a couple of hours with it. Then a nice cruise around town.

I have no doubt they will be a good thing, but I have my heart set on a Jaguar XF diesel.
I think I might have been the first to mention them on this site (happy to stand corrected) but in any case, I have always been a fan and will buy a diesel auto when I get one. :)
Even second hand low kms is OK.

I must admit, if I had the money, so would I.  :goodjob2:

However, in reality, I might think of disposing of the Commodore and driving my son's now discarded 1986 GC Ford Meteor, complete with leaking boot. There are rubber bungs at the bottom, so I took them out. The water comes in at the top and flows out at the bottom.

How far away am I from the rest of you guys, talking Genesis, Jags, etc.  :(

Seeking happiness, is sometimes a difficult task.

Speak to your Dealer Principal, #5 must be worth something, It's all about positioning and leadership. Imagine the motivational force you would create in your service team, if they had something like that to aspire to.

I'm talking Genesis of course, not Jag.  :p
