Was looking at tinting my new i30 SR this weekend however came across this in the car manual... has anyone tinted the front windscreen?
I Don’t think I will unless i can tint all the screens... if anyone has tinted all windows except for the front could you please post a photo? In my mind it would look weird but would love to be proven wrong!

Hi Tristan, I'm a huge fan of tint. It makes a big difference with the heat you feel through the side windows even here in Tassie. I also like the way it reduces glare from the sun and from headlights through your back window and mirrors at night. THe other benefit is of course the appearance of the car with tinted windows.
I have had at least my last 10 cars tinted (I've had over 30 cars in 40+ years) but have never had my windscreen tinted. In fact I thought it was illegal in most if not all states of Australia??
Here's my car.

Plenty of photos in the gallery of cars with tinting :)
Not sure why you would think not tinting the front windscreen would look weird :undecided: cars have never been allowed to tint the front window.

20 % all round on our cars for years.
Some will do front, "cash only & we didn't do it , dont blame us for defect sticker".
Insurance co's will NOT cover you.
-
Front window tint is illegal, at least in W.A. The guy who does my cars said that. He added that what you see on car ads (no see through windscreen tint) is only done for the shoot and is removed immediately.

Are they just offering the 15cm strip across the top or the whole windscreen? be pretty stupid of them to do the whole wind screen even for cash as they can actually lose their license :disapp: reflection off side windows is bad enough at night, having the front windscreen tinted would be absolutely terrible
-
Screen on my Mazda 3 is tinted (60%), bit ordinary to drive at night time so am not surprised it is illegal here !!

Quite a few problem with the Mazda, tinted windscreen - tinted head lights - number plate behind grill which I think is also illegal throughout south east Asia but their policing is pathetic, no wonder their accident percentages are through the roof

Yeah , think that's where the " we didn't do it" part comes in.

It would be a dog move for someone to dob them in as they obviously requested windscreen tint but you could bet it will happen and the "we didn't do it" wont save em.

It's legal to tint the windscreen but only in a strip above the sweep of the wipers.
I've done a few of our cars a bit deeper than that. In line with the shaded section around the area of the rear view mirror.
Happy to argue that as the sun visors actually go below that line when they are down. And they block your vision completely. At least you can still see through the tint.
-
We know the top strip is legal Trev, it's the whole windscreen that Tristan60d was wanting to have done.

I know that.
I was just adding information for anyone who might want to know more details.

Hi Mickd
Is that legal to have 20% tint? in NSW

Hi Mickd
Is that legal to have 20% tint? in NSW
According to the information I was given the other day from Tint a Car - 20% is now legal in all states except Tasmania on rear glass, fronts are supposed to be 35% though many like myself have the 20% all round as it looks good :)
-
what would be the implication if you have all 20% all round? Cop pulling over with fines? or insurance void due to illegal tint?
I found 35% is just too light, yet all the other potential legal issue scare me
-
Thanks Craig, correct.
35% on drivers and pass. front side windows.
Front Not allowed.
Rest can be lower 20% or less.
Have had 20% on our cars since 1989 -nothing on front though - no dramas.
Both our i30 & Santa have 20% strips across top of windscreen.
I sure Police have bigger issues to worry about, but Insurance Co may look for an escape clause,
-
If the police wanted they could yellow sticker the vehicle, I've only ever seen them really take notice of it though with hoon drivers, they've certainly never bothered myself or anyone else I know but for people that attract unwelcome attention to themselves then they might have more reason to be worried.
As far as insurance is concerned I've also never seen a claim refused because of tinting, not to say it hasn't happened of course but I've not heard of it.
The restrictions on tinting are there so people are able to see into the vehicle, not out, so visually your driving abilities aren't affected though it can possibly affect another drivers (3rd parties) ability visually.
What I do notice police crack down on though is limo tint, that's just asking for trouble.
-
I dont know what 20% is like but i do know 35% is crap ... maybe i'll go somewhere between 20% and 35% ... say ... 25% or 30%??

"The law is the law.
Be it on your head when it is broken. "
Quote from my cousin who was a copper many years ago, when I got my license.
Both i30 & Santa have 20 % on the side fronts. That's on me.
No one can say "she'll be right", it's the chance you take.
My early cars had WAY bigger illegal mods, paid the price a few times, again, my choice at the time.
-

You can have a look at the shade difference when at the tinting shop, they usually have them all up on display.
20% is one shade darker than 35%, there is no inbetween, next shade darker again is 15% and so on.
The tint on mine for example is Tint a Car's Octane tinting at 20% all round.

Hi All
Im in sydney, anyone have a recommendation for a good reliable tinting provider? and which brand of tint i should ask for?
Thanks.
Kind Regards
-
As mentioned in my pm reply to you yesterday Tint a Car do the Octane tint which has a nice black look to it, they also do the new Spector tint which has ceramic formulation.
When looking at the display last week Octane still looked the best though :)

Sydney is a vast place, could you narrow your area please 👍
DON'T use Motorone for any product - way overpriced.

Im in the Bankstown area

You could start with a local search :) :link: Auto tint in Sydney, Bankstown - Bing (https://www.bing.com/search?q=Auto+tint+in+Sydney%2C+Bankstown&qs=n&form=QBRE&sp=-1&pq=auto+tint+in+sydney%2C+bankstown&sc=0-30&sk=&cvid=C71EB89AF37E4F87807232DF333FC280)
All on the map :link: tint a car Sydney, Bankstown - Bing (https://www.bing.com/search?q=tint+a+car+Sydney%2C+Bankstown&qs=n&form=QBRE&sp=-1&pq=tint+a+car+sydney%2C+bankstown&sc=0-28&sk=&cvid=A58DA90604CE4383A2B4396FB763E7CD)

Once you find a couple of handy ones google for some reviews. Might find something on Productreview.com as well.
-
@Blazorax , I think what the guys are saying is none of them are close enough to you to have any personal experiences they can draw on.
Dazzlers tip about searching on line for reviews of local providers is a good one.
But please let us know how you go.

Thanks Trev. Yes, we have nearly 10,000 members but they are spread world wide (well over 60 countries) We have a lot of Aussie members but the strongest states for active members are WA and Qld and even these members are spread around a bit.
-
Name a time and date and have a big Aussie BBQ :) for all i30 owners :P
I'll bring a few bottles of whiskey to contribute hehehe

Sounds like a plan! :happydance:
I've travelled all over Australia in the 10 years since we started the club. I've met over 50 members in total in every State and Territory in Australia. The most we've had together in one gathering is probably about 10 people including partners.
I'd love to meet some overseas members but due to several health issues I don't travel long distances well. :Pout:
-
Meeting overseas members is good.
Fatboy and I have both met Brian in Aberdeen (years apart).
Fatboy and I haven't met yet though. :crazy1: :crazy1:
However, we've both met Dazz so maybe that counts. 😁
-
I'm hoping some overseas members might make it to Tassie one day... :Good_luck:
We've had probably a dozen Aussie members visit us down here. :goodjob2:

I took a photo of the tint display today so you can get a rough idea of the shades available, Spectre is the top of the range ceramic tint, about $500 installed and is suitable for vehicles with GPS/FM antennas in the rear glass, it does has some extra heat blocking benefits too as does the Formula One.
Octane is the most commonly installed tint due to it's darker shade, the Octane 20 is what is legally allowed on rear glass though if like me I have Octane 20 all round :D and is $375 installed.
Midnight Express ( has a more reflective look) is the previous generation darkest tint before Octane, I cant remember what the last one was called but it was the cheap and nasty budget crap anyway at $295 installed :whistler:

Mate u r a legend. A picture speaks a thousand words. It's so bloody hard to visualize with all these 35% vs 20% etc.
Thanks dude.
Kind Regards.
PS: I want 20% all round too, yet a bit chicken with the law and stuff ... might do a compromise with 35% front and 20% rear tomorrow.
-
You're welcome :hatoff: all have lifetime/25 year warranty...make sure "not" to use ammonia based window cleaners :goodjob2:

If in doubt go 35% all around. Dark back and lighter front looks $hit in most people's opinion. :undecided:
-
Thx bro, i'll keep that in mind too.
@Dazzler - would it be possible to pin @CraigB tint photo in the forum somewhere easily accessible. I would think a lot of users would find that comparison very handy.
Just a suggestion - u da boss.

Cheers, Yeah good idea. I'll copy it into its own thread and pin it in exterior mods. :victory:
See if you can find a car with darker windows in the back to see what you think. Here are a few pix i found with a quick google search. You might like the look but I reckon it looks "naff"

Agreed :goodjob2: two different shades of tint on the same vehicle just looks wrong imo.

@CraigB , @Dazzler
I listened and applied 35% all round, didn't come out too badly

Thanks for everyones replies!! My sr is now fully tinted and looking schmick... went with octane in the end. Will post some photos soon

I just got my car tinted, I ended up doing 70% on the whole front windscreen with a 5% strip on top. The rest of the windows are 10% tint. The lighting really makes the tint look much darker then it is in person.

Sexy
Would tinting the top bar of the windscreen affect the I30 electronics stuff near the rear mirror? I recalled that Hyundai specified that in the event that the windscreen is replace, it will need to have Hyundai to recalibrate it again
-
@S203 Some consider the latest i30 shape to be too conservative, but in that colour and at that angle it looks so classy to me. :victory:
-
Thanks all! My car is the Base Sport model in the US, so I do not have any electronics in my windscreen. So can't comment on how it would effect those features. But it does keep the car nice and cool!
-

@Blazorax I don't think it would be an issue as being applied on the inside they would just trim it around camera/sensor module.

R8ght you are Dazz, we put 20% strip on front of Santa, they trimmed to the dark area around electronics.

the electronic gizmo's are typically in the blackout coating on the glass , they wont tint that.
