Title: Going to Spray my alloys Gloss Black (Thanks Hemmi for the Photoshopping)
Post by: Dazzler on December 22, 2017, 08:25:58
As a few of you know, I recently curbed a rim. My mate Garry who owes me a few favours was going to fix it for me if I got some of the right colour mixed up. He used to be a panel beater and spray painter. I've seen plenty of his work and he has all the gear.

So, I've decided to get him to spray all four wheels 2 pack Gloss black, after Christmas... He's more than happy to do it. I'll help with the rubbing down and masking etc.  :victory:

I am not a huge fan of the blacked out look, but I think it will be a nice way of personalising my car.  :happydance:

I might do a photoshop of one of my pictures a bit later and add it to this thread.

Any chrome on the SR? Blacken those off too to make it look uniform. They have some businesses around here that do everything from badges to wheels. My son was looking into it as he wants to get his Audi done.

Dazz, why not do them in black plasti dip first and see if the look is what you're after, if you like it then get ya mate to do the professional job at a later date.

Or... :D I think black chrome would go well on a red car but it would be awkward having to get the tyres removed - wheels prepped and chromed then tyres refitted.

Very little Chrome on the SR so I am pretty sure the black will work. There is a red FD CW on the coast with Black alloys which I have often admired.

You know me Craig. Black chrome would look ace, but out of my mate doing it for the cost of the paint or doing black chrome for $1000+ I'm sure you'd know which one I'd choose. Will do photoshop later today, but I'm confident Black will be fine. Don't think I'll bother with a trial run...

I don't like black wheels. I think the new i30 looks great as it is.  Black wheels are a current fashion which will soon be abandoned.

I've actually said the same thing about the black wheel trend in the past Alan. However, because the PD has the black centre cap I think the all black wheels are an improvement in this instance. Even pre the current trend, which doesn't seem to be abating over here anyway, I have liked the look of black wheels on a red car.

@CraigB don't fall over with shock mate, but I think I actually agree with you for once about going satin rather than gloss.

Hi Jayce,

We will take the wheels off the car (obviously) but just mask the tyres.

My mate reckons with me helping to prep (rub down) the wheels and mask up the tyres and stuff (under supervision) it shouldn't take more than half a day (so around 4 hours)

Automotive "2 pack" paint dries very quickly.

I think the benefit of satin black will be that they won't show the brake dust or road grime as much as gloss black would.

Trish actually likes the idea of the red rim protectors  Which surprises me.  :crazy1:

Ok. So it happened today. Comedy of errors with my mates old compressors and other things holging us up. But, took our time and made a full day out of it. Looks pretty much like the photoshop preview which is great!   :happydance:

The overspray through to the back of the rim looked patchy but instead of spraying the back blsck i just brushed that with some dark grey hammertone paint which was ideal. It's jacked up in the before shot and sitting up a bit in the aftwr shot after sitting on stands most of the day.

The repaired wheel is perfect. You wouldn't pick it. :victory:

Thanks craig it is ironic because like Alan I haven't really been into the black wheels trend, but it works with those black centre caps and black trim on the SR non-premium. I wouldn't be at all surprised if hyundai does a run with the black wheels like they did with the Trophy (sort of black chrome)

Highly salubrious Dazz   :goodjob2:

:drinks: I had to google that word to work out how it related to my car ...  :D

Yes, with my interpretation it meant upmarket. :D Took me ages to convince my wife it was a real word before we had a computer.

I kind of had the gist of the word, but when I googled it I worked out that was what you probably meant. Thanks again. Trish AND the Grandkids like them, so it must be good.

sorry to hijack your post dazz but has anyone used this paint to paint wheels before? and how did it look after a year?

:link: VHT Wheel Paint Clear Coat (https://www.autobarn.com.au/vht-wheel-paint-clear-coat-sp184)

Looking to paint mine gloss black. I've done it in the past with my old car and was happy with the immediate result but after a few months or a year or so, the colour went from gloss black to ashy. No matter how much i cleaned it, it never got to the gloss black colour again. Perhaps the step i missed spraying clear shiny coat would have helped and prevented this?

Does anyone else have experience with this? really keen for black wheels on my white SR but this put me off DIY. everyone else seems to have positive experience tho

Yeah, the clear coat would definitely help provided it didn't start to peel like clear coat can in some circumstances.  One of the reasons my mate recommended the two pack is that it doesn't deteriorate like most normal paint does...

Getting lots of positive comments from everyone who sees it in the flesh. Took a few more photos today and getting my Brother Richard to photoshop the roof gloss black. Quite tempted to get the roof and maybe the section between Bonnet and grill vinyl wrapped in black.

Very, very nice. When my funeral insurance is paid out I am going to get one of those and paint my wheels black. :snigger:
