GOT PROBLEMS OR ISSUES? => DIESEL => Topic started by: olliebrkr on January 15, 2018, 12:48:16

Hello!
This is my first post here. I just purchased a 2012 plate i30 1.6 CRDi with around 55k miles on the clock. Sadly it immediately had to be fitted with a new clutch and fuel filter.. but that's been done and sorted now.
After using it for a proper commute I've noticed that I can't sit at 30mph in 4th gear without the engine juddering slightly. This is around 1,150/1,200 rpm. What I'm wondering is whether this is the sign of a potential issue or if it's just the gear ratios?
In my previous cars (a 2014 diesel 1-series and Toyota Aygo petrol) they'd happy sit in 4th at 30mph. Sure if I put my foot flat to the floor nothing would really happen unless I downshifted.
Any thoughts? After my initial disappointment at the car needing a new clutch—which the garage paid for—I'm a little jumpy at every little thing I notice so forgive me if this is expected of this car.
All help appreciated :)

When i had my crdi i could only use 4th at 35 mph plus.
So what you have is probably correct.
As an example, In my petrol i can be in 6th at 35 mph!

That's exactly the same as me. Good to know it's not just me :) Crazy how different the gear ratios can be!

If I'm below 1300/1400 revs in 4th gear it will behave the same. It's not an error, it's a characteristic

Same here. I have a 50k zone near home and I often have to take it almost to 18k in 3rd before easing it into 15k at the 50k. That range between 3rd and 4th is always where I need to rev higher than I'd like.

18K! That won't keep you in the 4's :crazy1:

have to remember, this is a small motor at only about 96 cubic inch or 16,000cc, but it does a fantastic job!
also all the different diesel's are set up and geared different, the cars are also different weights. if your in a flat area no hill's, might get away with that low rev, but if she shudders just shift to a lower gear as your lugging it. there is no problem .

Lakes, you gave it 1 too many zeros -1600 cc not 16,000 cc.
Funny the difference a "0" makes . Imagine that though, a 16 litre 4 cyl

a 16 litre 4 cyl
