I don't get the Black Friday significance either.

My understanding is that it's the Friday of or following ThanksGiving Day in the USA where it traditionally was not a day of retail trading. This changed and it was open for business in some locations this year. It was also a day on which Apple offered certain items at a discount which last year gave my purchase of an Mac Book Air a free hard disc drive.

What is "Black Friday"?

In the United States it is the day after Thanksgiving and the stores have had sales on that day for many years. It is the busiest shopping day of the year.

A few years ago Amazon UK decided to do Black Friday offers to grab in some money before the Xmas sales (which  have often started before Christmas Day for some time now).  Other firms have decided to join in since then.

According to Wikipedia "The day's name originated in Philadelphia, PA, where it originally was used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic that would occur on the day after Thanksgiving. Use of the term started before 1961 and began to see broader use outside Philadelphia around 1975. Later an alternative explanation was made: that retailers traditionally operated at a financial loss ("in the red") from January through November, and "Black Friday" indicates the point at which retailers begin to turn a profit, or "in the black"

It will no doubt make its way to Australia in the next year or two.

You won't catch me queueing up outside big shops to physically grab a bargain but some of the deals on Amazon this year were pretty good. I decided I didn't really need the items anyway so no big parcels are heading my way.

I'm a bit of a shopaholic if you hadn't noticed! 

But i won't queue at shop doors on opening time! 

I have been good lately since I realised most super specials are repeated or even bettered later on.

If in doubt I wait and then grab it the 2nd or 3rd time it's offered if I can't resist..

I think here in uk shop saw the opportunity to get rid of old stock or models especially tv's etc.

Some of these so called bargains are not all they are cracked up to be.

Our toaster died last week and I replaced it. The same item appeared on the retailers web site as a special black day offer at £2 more than I paid.

We are going to Tenerife in February. 2 weeks ago I booked the flights. yesterday I received an Email from the same airline advertising a special offer of 4000 black Friday flights at prices starting at £29.99. Out of curiosity I filled in our dates. luggage. leg room seats etc and the price quoted was £40 more than we paid.
