Hi All,

As you probably saw, I put new rims + tyres on my car.
I've put a 17" package on (225/45/17's) the same size and fitting as the SR.

Was wondering if the SR has firmer suspension or springs than the SLX?

Why I ask..
The drivers side rear tyre slightly touches when going over rough bumps at the moment.
Not sure where it touches, but it looks like it might be just touching the rear guard. You can hear a bit of a scrape.

Its not overly bad, but seeing as they're the same size (and width) tyres as the SR, I cant see it being a size issue.

Anyone else with non-stock rims had this trouble?

Thanks,
Cam

Hi Cam, I don't have that problem with mine, yours might be a tad wider. You may find that you will need to get the edges of the wheel guard rolled under. I had top this with my previous car, a Hyundai Sonata when i Put 19" alloy rims on it.

Thanks for the info eyma.

What are the dimensions of your tyres?
Are they 225's or 215's?
:)

Thanks,
Cam

Hi Cam,

I have put the SR rims onto my SLX and have had no problems at all,
even when carrying two passengers in the back, over bumps etc.

Are the track width and offset of your mags the same as the SR ones?
I'm not really sure what the SR measurements are offhand.

Anyway here is a link that explains this sort of stuff....

http://www.hondatuningmagazine.com/tech/htup_0807_honda_wheel_offset_guide_faq_tips_biggest_lip_wheel/measuring_wheel_offset_and_track_width.html

Don't know if this helps or not, but I know on a previous car the new wheels affected the track width because the offset was not correct and this caused a similar problem to yours. Ended up swapping the wheels. Hope you don't have to go that far.

Thanks Eyma.
I'm guessing when you got yours lowered its stiffened the suspension quite a bit?

Thanks Russ for the info and the link.
The SR comes with 225/45/17's (17 x 7) according to the specs sheet on the hyundai oz site.
Which are exactly the same size, fitting and dimensions as the ones I've got.

However, even with the stock wheels on I noticed that I used to scrape (drivers right side rear) going out the driveway with passengers.
I'm thinking that I may have a dud spring possibly?

I'd rather put stiffer springs in than change the tyre size.
Atleast now I know that a 17" SR tyre (which has the same specs as mine) doesnt have any issues on an SLX.

I may pop into pedders and see what they say.

Cam,

The thing that many after-market wheels don't match is one of the most important things to get right - which is the offset. The problem is, the offset is rarely mentioned in the wheel specs on web sites. Do you know if your after-market rims are the same offset as the SR rims?

Oggie I think you're right.
As Russ and Eyma mentioned earlier, it probably is the offset.

I just checked then and the newer ones do stick out quite a bit further.
I'm probably going to have to get the guards rolled and possibly stiffer suspension.

I'm no genius with all of the tyre terminology, but it appears the offset has caught me out!
The SR rims must be the same sized tyre and height, but with a smaller offset.

Thanks for the info guys.
Its helped a lot.

The distance from where the wheel mounts the hub to the outside of the wheel logically should be identical, as should the diameter of the tyre (unless you want to alter the overall gearing), no matter what wheel and tyre combination is chosen if you intend to maintain the designed margin to the bodywork.

I would be less inclined to be looking at altering the suspension or the guards than addressing the problem with the dealer that sold you the wheels.  Particularly as the combination you chose is normal (SR) specification for the car so they should fit.

I think perhaps they made a mistake and didn't get the offset right.  It would be of great help if somebody with an SR can measure it so that Cam can compare to his.

Thanks Pip.
I've taken the wheels off and put the stock ones on.

I'm going to measure the offset after to see what it is.
I'll call them on Monday and see what they say.

There is an 8mm offset difference between the 17's and the stock 16's.
I wouldnt have thought 8mm would make a huge difference?

Can I ask a favour of someone please? (not eyma, your's has stiffer suspension :P)
On your rear drivers side, could you see how much the suspension bounces?

Mine seems to be really sloppy.
After I stop bouncing the car, the suspension creaks and bounces for a couple of seconds.
Even going over a reasonably smooth section of highway, the ride seems to be really soft (in some spots bouncy).

Hi Cam,

I just went out and tried to bounce mine ... I would say very firm (without bragging  :D) Not sloppy at all..  :P

Hope no neighbors were watching... probably looked a bit strange  :-[

It's dark now so I can't look at how close mine is to judge whether 8mm will make a difference but I agree 8mm doesn't seem a lot but if the original tolerance is tight it just might be.

The other thing... even if the shocks are no good you should not be able to induce contact between tyre and body under any circumstance.  This would be incredibly poor design and unimaginable.

Show the problem to the dealer and ask him politely to resolve it.

Errmm, no bounce on mine, stock standard SLX, stock rims and tyres.

Push down, let go, it rises back up and stays put. No bouncing nor creaking.

I would take it back to the dealer and get them to do a bounce check on a new vehicle in the yard, if it is not the same, then request now strut insurts to be fitted, because that doesn't sound right

I'll keep you updated.

Suspension shouldnt continue to bounce, once i stopped bouncing the car it returned to its natural point immediately.
And SLX and SR suspension is the same but only in AUS, AUS got different suspension setups from the rest of the world.

Thanks G14.

Thanks everyone for their help too.
Its been great and I've learnt quite a bit over the past week.

To conclude my little saga, we were able to swap the tyres over today. They now have 205/50/17's on them.
With Michelin Pilot Sport tyres (which are apparently near $400 a tyre!!)

I havent put them on yet. But I'm looking forward to getting on.
I'm leaving the stock on for Friday when it visits the dealer. I want them to see how bouncy the suspension is.

So I guess the moral of buying any tyre/wheel package is enquire about the offset! lol

Thanks guys.
:D

Hey Camerooney,

Did you get spacers for the 17 inch wheels? I notice that the options catalogue specifies them to be fitted with the 17's.

I'm no mechanic, but thought I'd just ask - disregard my 2cents if it's something you have already got.

is there anything different between the SLX and SR suspensions? I was told by one dealer the SR is slightly stiffer... but who knows what rubbish they spread :S
