Up or down you'll have the same space unless you pull the seats out. Like if they're folded they'll take the same space as if they weren't,  just in a different part of the car. The only real difference will the the length of items you can fit in.

As Josh says, your volume will not change either way. It will depend entirely on the size and shape of your cargo. I've had Firty loaded to the max for moving interstate (a military man's routine) and seats down was always what suited me best, with smaller loose items slipped in under the lowered seats on the floor.

Will you have rear seat passengers?

If no and you are carrying bulky items I personally put both seats flat as it allows for better packing and access.

If 1 or 2 then put smaller seat flat.

If 1 put larger seat flat.

I carry my push bike in the car to get to various distant places for rides.

I remove the front wheel but due to the frame/rear wheel length I put seats down.
