for anyone that's interested. both of my i30s  are coming up to the 4 year old mark so i thought i would quiz my dealership about the cost and interval for timing belt replacement.   the service dept said the cost was around  $550 and its due for replacement at 6 years or 90,000kms,that seems like a long time for a person doing low km driving.  :sweating:

A friend had a 1993/4 Mazda 323 Astina 1.8 and I am pretty sure that the owner's manual simply said for the timing belt to be replaced at 100,000 ks.  There was no time/number of years specified.

90,000 seems fairly universal for timing belt replacement from what I have seen...Although not sure I have ever kept a car long enough to need one doing

That's true but where JH came unstuck was charging a high price for the 90k service on a diesel i30 because that was the case when it wasn't really the case at all because it doesn't have one.

$550 for the whole service or just the belt replacement?

Just from a cost point of view, it gives you something to work on. The Goodyear stores I work at all have access to the Repco schedule which is where I got those prices.
There's a workshop up the road from me called Pelican Motors and I've had a good look through their premises. Have recommended it to a couple of people based on what I've seen there and each is happy with them.
But you have to make a call based on how you see the individual business.
