Cars with any kind of modification could fail the UK MOT inspection if new EU rules get the green light from member states.

Even aftermarket wheels, a tow bar, roof rails, modified lighting or body kits could bring a fail, and mean cars would have to undergo costly, time-consuming vehicle approval testing before they could be considered roadworthy.

This will be the result of an EU proposal to change the definition of the roadworthiness test so that "components of the vehicle must comply with characteristics at the time of first registration" – which will outlaw any deviation from factory specification.

The Automobile Association technical specialist Vanessa Guyll said: "The AA is very worried about this. It seems completely over the top. The regulations would be too draconian even if watered down to include only parts that affect performance, safety or emissions”.

Owners would need to buy expensive original parts - even for older cars. And models made by defunct brands, where original parts are no longer available, would have to go through expensive vehicle approval testing after any repair.

crazy, crazy, crazy.
You guys really need to give the EU the flick.

I wonder, if Scotland votes to seccede from the UK, if they'll also pass on EU membership.

You need people power.
People who own cars also vote.

It's an economically ridiculous move. Literally thousands of after market manufacturers will go to the wall, along with many thousands of jobs.

I really wonder which bureaucrats come up with these ridiculous ideas.
The day they stop allowing modifications on cars, is the day there will be lots of revolting people.  ;)
What possible motive could they have?
Many modifications make cars safer.

"You vill all drife ze same cars... individuality ist criminal unt shall not be possible. Any person not abiding by zis law shall be outlawed and executed."

I'm sure that in the EU like many other big "companies" there is a Department paid to dream stuff up for passing through legislation to justify the huge EU running costs & gravy train.

I for one... as  a true Englishman say :-
"To hell with the EU... Fascists the lot of them... sooner out the better"!

More than us... in the EU there actually IS such a thing... its a money pit... asking for more during a recession indicates how cut off from reality they are...

If you ask me, the bombs are going off in the wrong places of the world. What are the statistics for accidents / damage casued specifically by aftermarket devices.  :disapp: :fum: :fum:

Somehow I think our safety & health is far from the cause for this. I'm a cynic after all my years on this earth and I smell MONEY... From fines for transgressing in the slightest...

Can't really believe this one will be approved.

If so, it will create a lot of civil disobedience...

The EU... Excuse my language but...
The whole lot of the buggers on the EU gravytrain are faceless, unaccountable tossers.
They do nothing for Europe but perpetuate the myth that they do, while lining their own pockets and building a Club based on nepotism.

I truly despise the EU and state here and now we should get out.

Life might be hard for a while trade wise... but I'm certain we would be fine trading with the world free from the grip of the European tyrants who persistently pi$$ me and most of the UK off...

I feel better for that!

Very funny Dazz,

@Ffoxy,

You could always come back to trading with us and NZ like you used to in the 60'. We've opened up new markets in Asia and the Middle East, thank goodness but it would be nice to have you back.  :)

If it were up to me that would be a deal! But I think EU MP's have got very scared since WW2 and feel everyone should be involved in each others affairs to maintain the status quo... (Rockin all over the World anyone?) And to "some" member states that means a land grab with no guns... this time.
