Title: Sudden loud whistle from turbo, just like a siren, should I be worried??
Post by: ka_ching on December 19, 2014, 11:13:19
Just took the i30 diesel down to the shops and under acceleration went from quiet to a very loud siren whistle noise. Something has failed in the turbo, can anyone help?? Any ideas of dollars to fix too would be great!

Your user name answers this question.

Seriously though it might be a split in a hose or something simple like that.

Is it still under warranty?

If so just let the dealer sort it....

Was there lots of black smoke accompanying the sound? If so, I would suggest you have a split turbo hose.

Thing is, you've got a tuningbox fitted and you throw it around Sydney Motorsport Park under jaw-breaking acceleration :scared:

I'd not be surprised if you've cooked that wee Garrett turbo...

I hope you have deep pockets :sweating:, if you're going to race the i30 around tracks then you'll be forking out money for repairs left right & centre as the car isn't designed for that :whistler:

WTF?? - the i30 isn't designed for motorsport, this is news to me. I was told this car had an enviable record for track success and was the choice of car for criminals wanting a quick esacpe, at least that's what the used car salesman said to me when I told him I wanted a hot hatch. Thank you Shables and CragB for enlightening me, I would be truely lost without you both.

Definitely, i have happened to see multiple cases on my account. A WV an a Mer cedes E 270 CDI. They both ended up with turbo failure. Furthermore a mechanic stated that whistling turbo means that it is going to fail.
My suggestion is that make it checked before it fails.

Mine started making a whistle noise and for 4 months I argued with Hyundai to have it replaced. thankfully avoided something possibly happening in the future when the car is out of warranty.

Turbo failure confirmed, Hyundai quoted $4500 for a new turbo, aftermarket $1300 plus labour, should get away with it for under $2k. It might now be relegated to teaching my kids how to drive.

The only written evidence I have is what I attached in the thread below

:link: Turbo whistle (https://www.i30ownersclub.com/forum/index.php?topic=19654.msg283052#msg283052)

They had my car for 2 days because they were having issues trying to get the old turbo off. I ended up with a hire car.

If they are asking $2,800 for labour, than they would be counting for worst case scenario.

My dealer forgot to get a copy of my service records and couldnt get paid from Hyundai until I sent them in. He was telling me they were going to be out of pocket 4k if I didn't send the records to them... since they were the only helpful dealership I sent them in.

I was expecting that but i am really sorry to hear this though.
Also 4500 $ is waaay overpriced. At least for Türkiye

The car has just over 200,000 kms on it. I've since found a secondhand unit for $650 so it will be fitted early Jan. This turbo has done 64000 kms so should keep us going until we sell it and upgrade.

Good find. How much for labour or doing it yourself?

Hi Ka Ching,
I can't see a problem, giving it the stick.
There was a member from western Australia that did compeat in an FD i30 CRDi a while back.
I like them but never though they were a performance car.

How many seconds down quarter mile did you do? & what was the trap speed?

Are you a Bogan?  :)

No I'm not doing the install myself, have my trusted mechanic working on it this week. I'm not sure of the labour cost but was originally quoted $2400 with new turbo including labour, the bill so far is $675 for the secondhand turbo delivered.

Hi Lakes, no I'm not a bogan, I dont have any tatts of Ned Kelly, the Southern Cross or the Australian Flag on me.

I wasn't pushing that hard on the track, its very obvious the car is not designed for performance, at the time I didn't have any other vehicle to drive and I'm not one to sit on the side and watch everybody else have fun. Plenty of people will take out their non perfromance road car on the track, I've seen standard Ford and Holden sedans, utes, and station wagons cut laps. You drive to the performance of the car. I'm buying a ute soon as my tow vehicle and looking to get a proper race car later this year, not a Hyundai, probably an RX7 or MX5 with a decent amount of grunt and good handling.

In terms of times, I was driving on a circuit, not a drag strip. It was a slow time but better than expected. I did have a lot of fun but if I was going to take another Hyundai to the track, it would have to be a turbo Veloster or the rumored turbo i30 hot/warm hatch that's in the works or maybe the i30 SR.

The diesel is definitely no race car. It's got torque that's it. I've given up trying to beat someone off the lights. Its a slow and steady wins the race kind of engine

Ok folks, just to let everyone know the replacement turbo fitted cost me $534 which included an oil and filter change.

All up costs as follows
Replacement turbo delivered was $675
Towing to workshop was $125
Fitting to i30 & oil change $534
Total $1334 - saving $1066 over NRMA quote.

Original quote from NRMA Motorserve was $2400 to supply and fit.

No more track time but its been a fun and I've learnt quite a bit also. I hope my experience has been helpful to you all or at least entertaining.

Cheers ka_ching
