Title: Petrol filler cap (location) - dash arrow
Post by: TerryT on September 16, 2019, 09:58:26
I recently read that the location of a car's petrol filler cap (i.e. left or right side of car) is often indicated by an arrow next to the dash petrol bowser icon.  (Forgive my ignorance of this feature, the last new car I bought before my i30 SR was in 2006, and I don't recollect any arrow on its dash).

Today, I noticed that my dash arrow pointed to the right, which is wrong because the filler cap is on the left.  See photo below.  I mentioned this curiosity to a friend who checked his sister's 2-y-o i30 Active, and her dash arrow points to the left, correctly.  See photo below.

So, what other members have got i30's with 'wrong' arrows?  And, does anyone know why Hyundai would do that?

I understand that the cars are built in different factories in the world for different markets, but still...?   The arrow is a handy feature, especially for those jumping in and out of different cars, but has made useless in my car.

The top photo is surely showing the distance to empty not the location of the filler?

Thanks Shambles, that makes sense...now. A case of me reading something and then making an assumption for my car, thrown off by the arrow on that i30 Active.

So, the arrow in my i30 SR is for the 'distance to empty' feature and not for a filler cap location.   The i30 Active has no 'distance to empty' feature (so no arrow for it) but the car does have a filler cap location arrow. Easy...now. :)

Seeing the numbers beside the bowser gave it away for me. I haven't looked that closely at Mrs G's PD but Firty definitely has the filler pointer (left) at the analog fuel gauge. :goodjob:

its pointing AT the side of the car where the cap is, from the drivers perspective. Pretty sure my old i30 was the same way around.

D'oh!!!  Please delete my first post from your collective minds, with my apologies.  Embarrassing, but mystery solved.

This morning I resorted to the work of the Devil and read the Owner's Manual, and a picture in there of a dash petrol gauge provided the answer.  See photo below of my dash petrol gauge...complete with its own little petrol bowser icon and arrow correctly pointing to the left.

I fell for the old three card trick; took the first, prominent fuel bowser icon & arrow I saw on the dash (i.e. 'distance to empty') simply because it fell to eye so readily...and I looked no further.

Some days, like yesterday for me, it just doesn't pay to get up.  :-[

Note to self.  Next time when in the car looking at stuff, wear your glasses...you need 'em!

Wife just left for work; very excited to find THE ARROW.  :goodjob2:

Maybe HY could also incorporate  a loud alarm and flashing reminder to put diesel in the tank ( her car only)  :winker:

If I ever got another diesel I was going to get a miss fueling device from RACT or similar (about $60 I think) but well worth it for absent minded people like me.
