I fuelled up yesterday before going up to Perth and just sat on the speed limit - 110 km/h, then 100 km/h, light throttle opening.
Fuel economy was showing 3.6 l/100 kms on the way up.
By the time I'm done some driving in heavier traffic in the suburbs it finished up on 4.0.
Came back down south and then did some more running around today and it's currently sitting on 4.1 l/100 kms after nearly 300 kms on this tank of diesel.
Gotta be happy with that.

I met a bloke recently who drove his 2013 GD Tourer CRDi Manual transmission to Melbourne and back (from Adelaide) and averaged 3.8 l/100km.

My response was "Great economy, but how many trucks blasted their horn at you because you were sitting at 90 - 95 km/h to achieve those figures?"

I reliably get 5.1 - 5.3 l/100 regardless of whether I'm driving in urban or country, and frankly that is good enough for me!

Recently did 3,500km trip through the Snowy's, Great Ocean Road etc with a fully loaded car and spent less than $200 on Diesel - you can't complain about that!

I've got a new i30 diesel with auto while a relative owns a Prius C.  In urban driving I am averaging 5L/100km while he is doing between 3.4 and 3.6L/100km (depending on weather). 

But in country driving the diesel is clearly superior.  On the same 320km drive I averaged 4.2L/100km while the Prius C consumed 5.4.  The Prius has never made sense for long highway and country drives.  There diesel rules supreme.  In urban stop start traffic a hybrid is better.  Each has its own strengths.

Driving enjoyment?  I love the shove of the i30 diesel and enjoy driving it more than the Prius C.  The Prius has almost as much torque as the i30, but it's always reliant on the battery to provide most of it.  If the battery goes down to half capacity the torque feed gets cut off and now the battery is just dead weight while the diesel keeps pulling as well as ever.

I'll drink to that Dazz. My 2014 Camry Altise Hybrid has max power of 151kw, plenty for this little black duck, I don't tow anything, apart from the Missus and my golf clubs.
