Red Fuel Filter light

Searched but can't see this posted anywhere so..........

Yesterday the red fuel filter light didn't go straight off when I started the car. It stayed on for a few minutes then went out.  It hapenned again later, so looking in the handbook it says there is a collection of water in the filter.

I've had a look but can't see how to remove the filter to empty.

Does anyone have a step by step instruction so I can empty the filter or is it a garage job.

Are you due for a service fairly soon eye..?  if so I would bring it forward and get the garage to change the filter.. They aren't cheap but are an important part of the system  (and would not be easy for a non mechanic to change I feel)
  • 2021 MG PHEV ( had 4 x i30 plus a Getz an Elantra and a Tucson)

If water is getting in there, shouldn't there be a fluid release valve?

There should be some sort of a drain valve on the bottom to let the water out.  You might need to open the tap and pump the hand primer until clean diesel comes out.  I must admit I havent looked at the filter too closely on my i30 but on other diesels I've worked on, there is a large plastic nut on the bottom of the fuel filter.  This is the float and switch assembly that detects the water, and switches on the warning light.  Generally on that same assy is the drain cock.

Service due mid September.

Light didn't come on first thing today but went out mid afternoon and it flickered for a few seconds whilst driving.

Looked again at the fuel filter and can't see how it comes out without taking all the pipes off etc.

The handbook seems to suggest that you can take the filter out and empty the water but not too sure it's as easy as made out in the book.

Looking at the top, here is a sort of circular disc which you can pump.

I understand that it is a replace item at 2 year service.  As service not due for 2.5 months I'll ring garage tomorrow and see if (a) it is covered under warranty or (b) they sort it out now and leave cost until the service in September.

Handbook indicates you remove fuel filter, but doesn't say how, drain water and refit.

Update

Phoned garage and as it is only flickering for a few secionds not to worry at this time.

If it comes on constant then to get back in touch and they will look at it.

Also, as service due in 2 months the fuel filter will be changed as part of the routine requirements.

The chap did say there should be a valve/nut under the housing which if loosened should either allow me to remove the filter and/or drain the water.

I'll check later, no rain permitting.

There should be a fairly easy way to drain the water out.  If its flickering on and off, and you cant drain the water out - I'd get it fixed straight away by someone who can.  Water is a very bad enemy of diesel injection components.  Keep driving, and expect some hefty repair bills.  It may be a sensor fault - bay may not be.

I agree but I've had a look tonight. I can't see any way of removing the filter without removing all pipes etc. as per the link in your post above. Unless anyone knows of "trade" know how.

If its flickering on and off,  

I take your point but the garage are Hy main dealer/service so they should know their own cars. They said only when the light is on constant do you need to empty the water.
 I've reported it and I have 5 year warranty.  
I'll see how it goes over the next few days.  

 It may be a sensor fault

That thought crossed my mind.  
Too wet to check now, rain again!!!.
Yes shambles,  the service will probably come before it's stops raining, but I'll check leads etc in the morning.

Update

Since the fill up the light hasn't appeared.

My guess it was a bad batch of fuel.

Anyway will keep my eye(30) on symbol.

I reckon much of the last 2 years has gone on researching topics and jokes for this site! 

Been a very lean few week from me as I've not had as much "free" time to research etc.

Been very very busy in work - big project thingy which all of a sudden I was told the deadline got moved forward 2 months.

So there was I moving along at normal speed, then panic for the last few weeks. Typical LG.

Having time off soon so nornal service should be resumed.

Just like to say we appreciate all your contributions..

and I can relate to your current predicament for two reasons..

I have about 2 weeks left to do four weeks work at the new house...

and having worked in Banking for 19 years and a number of other senior clerical/ sales positions I remember the pressure of deadlines very well... :rolleyes:

Update

Only problem with that tho - if it was water - only one place it could have gone - thru your injection system.  Those ultra-tight tolerance metal-to-metal sealing surfaces HATE water.  Not only does it interfere with the diesel's lubrication properties - it also likes to sit in low spots and corrode stuff.  Not to sound pessimistic - but hope it all turns out ok!

When it goes in for its service I'll ask them to check it out.

PS  There has been no drop in engine output.  In fact I think it was running better.

I think you would know it if water went through the injectors into the combussion chamber, as with 17:0.1 comp and boost of up to 20 pound. the water would not compress and would hydralic motor.
but if it's running sweet.....

WRT the light.....

When starting should you also wait for this light to go out? Or should you just start the engines once the glow plug light has gone out?

This light goes out a couple of seconds after the glow light does, I'm just wondering if it's too long a wait......

Just had the 30k service and it was like this before and still is now.

Hi Daniel, to tell you the truth, i never check mine, but i always watch the glow light and wait for it to go off before starting, but the oil light stays on a few seconds as the oil filter is upside down so the oil runs out when u leave motor stand, then fills up on start up thats just normal, the fuel filter light i have not checked, but most diel's if they get water in the fuel filter they give a warning, and if you don't rectify the problem with in a reasonable lenth of time (like they normaly warn you in plenty of time) the motor just stops you have to drain the water out the filter, but with the i30 they do not have a drain in the filter so it would be replacement, but not something that someone without the right tools or knowledge should try to perform but it's not hard if you know and have the right type socket and know what to do but, as i said, don't try it as it's equal to say a heart transplant, one mistake and they don't run at all.
i had mine changed last service.
I think the Hyundai fuel filter is extreamly expencive as most all CRD fuel filters are normaly about $20 to $30 Hyundai charge three times that, anyone know why?

G'Day Lakes - I dont think the water would cause hydraulic lock of the engine - the volume you are looking at is minuscule (les than 0.1 cubic millimetre from the top of my head) and also its been atomised and would turn to steam instantly.

It's replaced every 3 years (37,500m) if your interval is 12,500m

I guess if your interval is 10,000m then it's probably at 2 years (or 20,000m)

My service book says:

12 months or 10,000 miles
24 months or 20,000 miles
36 months or 30,000 miles etc

I wonder why mileage is different?

When I book for its service I'll ask what is included for the 20k service.
