I apologise in advance if this seems like an obvious question....

I purchased my i30 this week and is was advertised as a 2016 model but is listed also as MY17. The registration with Vicroads here in Victoria also reflects the same information.

When I happen to go into a dealership today for order a fitted cargo rubber liner they were able to tell me it was built 13 Dec 2016.

On the label inside the passenger door frame it had what appears to be a date of 4/17.

Can anyone help me understand the dates and more importantly do I call my i30 a 2016 or 2017 model?

Its a MY17 (Model Year)

They switch roughly around August time if my memory is correct.

The label inside the door is the 'Compliance Plate' that on AU cars like the Falcon and Commodore used to be metal and pop-riveted inside the engine bay.

It's the date the car was passed for use on Australian roads, so it took four months to get from South Korea into Australia and get passed for as suitable for Australian registration.

My car is late 2020 (October I think) and the Compliance Plate is January 2021. It is MY21 as it is a PD.4, cars from 2020 that are PD.3 would be MY20...in my opinion.

...coincidentally I think around August 2020 is when the PD.4 was released.

VicRoads lists my car as a 2021 Hyundai i30 with a Compliance date of 01/21...so I guess it's a 2021 car (sure as poop it would be what it'd be advertised as by a Dealership)...

Yes, there is Model Year (MY), which is the specification, manufacture date (in South Korea) and compliance date (in Australia).
My car was both built and Australian complianced in 2019, yet is a MY2018 PD2, meaning the spec didn't change from 2018 to 2019, but it's still a 2019 car.
So it was sold new as a 2019 car and when next sold it will be a 2019 car.

Thanks for the clarification.

So officially mine is a 2017 model (but built 3 weeks short of the new year) !   :)
