My wife and I both bought new Hyundai cars in Sept 2010 - she bought an i10, I bought an i30 (which was replaced with the new model in April 2012)

Last week I found myself driving her car one evening - it was raining heavily, pitch dark and she didn't want to drive because of poor visibility. After a while I noticed a strange buzzing sound which seemed to be coming from the right footwell. I asked her whether she could hear it.

"Yes" she says "It's been like that for months but is intermittent and only happens occasionally".

The following day I took the car for a spin and it didn't happen - I had a poke around under the bonnet, checked the exhaust and gave the dash a good bashing to see if there was something loose - but I couldn't find a problem.

However - I suggested that she should get the car looked at by our Hyundai dealers next time it happened.

This morning she drove in miserable foggy weather to visit her sister - who lives a couple of hundred yards from the dealership. On the way there the noise happened again so she popped into the dealers and one of the guys came out for a ride with her. But the noise had gone away - as it does.

However, the technician quizzed her which revealed that it normally only happened when the headlights were switched on - something she had not realised (and she had earlier used the lights while it was foggy). He knew instantly that it was the headlight levelling switch or motor at fault and the car is booked in next week to have it replaced.

I get the impression quality control from the euro factory might have improved with the GD model i30 too.. Don't seem to be getting any/many complaints about paint quality, suspension knocks etc.. since the release of the GD (Touch wood)

Hmm, funny how you guys allways praise the quality of the Korean build i30.

Mine is a 2008, thus a Korean build, and I'm certainly not satisfied with the quality of my car.

Rattles from the rear view mirror, the dash, front right door and the gear lever.

Clearly wear on the seat upholstery (drivers seat)

Clearly wear on the paint despite mud flaps and standard size tyres.

Flickering lights as posted elsewhere.


I do like the car anyway, a nice drive and good handling, but a bit disappointed with the quality.

I still think overall though that the average Korean built i30 has had less warranty claims than an equivalent euro built one...

I know the dash and mirror rattles were pretty common but generally the paint in the Korean cars was blemish free (if a little thin) and no problem with the suspension strut shrouds etc...

Built in Korea, but passed through and lives in Europe, that's why.

What sort of lights does the i10 have to warrant leveler motors.

Nothing special - just the normal 55w bulbs in projector reflectors. It has a manual beam adjuster in the dash like most cars.

Headlight levellers are one of those Euro features that seldom make it to oz for some reason .. Some euro cars are sold here with the feature but not many Asian or Aussie cars that I know of...

I had a car once that had a tyre lever down the side of the driver's seat.
It was a bad neighbourhood though.

You're too bloody quick..  I spotted it and fixed it but not quickly enough

I just took it for granted that most cars have headlight levellers - I cannot recall the last car I have driven without one. Perhaps there is some Euro rule about them?.

It is more necessary with small cars because the short wheelbase makes them more sensitive to weight in the boot lifting the front beam. It has less effect on a long wheelbase car.

I find the levellers very usefull when towing the caravan.

As we have the DRL, which on the FD is the headlights, it's very comfy to be able to set the light lower, so I don't annoy the oncoming traffic...

I can certainly see the benefit of remote levellers. You do get blinded from time to time over here by cars towing and heavily laden.

It is a cost saving measure I assume.. We do get some features from time to time not standard in europe (although can't think of an example at the moment) ..

If Ford or Holden or Toyota started fitting remote headlight levellers in OZ then I'm sure others would follow suit

I agree it is a good thing.
However, in this country that has so many drivers who are morons, we'd probably have issues with headlights aimed high via the lever as they approached other cars just because they can.
As far as it being standard equipment on our cars, I guess manufacturers will only include those devices demanded by the motoring public and if the people aren't complaining, the manufacturers won't include them in order to maximise their profits.
