Just looking at the "similar topics" listed below this (yeah, I know - no need to thank the admin for the feature :P) I see this particular part of a very long topic is quite interesting (plus, Terry's next post following it):

Hi Dazzler and Komaterpillar

Yes, our car only produces this white smoke on cold start up and not at any other time.
Also, the car did "chug" slightly at the same time but then the revs levelled out.
Today I went back to our local service centre and booked our car in for the glow plugs to be replaced
under warranty.
I was disappointed with the Hyundai Technician on Wednesday to say the least
I do hope Hyundai will sort out this problem!

Kindest regards
Rogmur :)

Hi Rogmur
i have had this problem.it never bothered me much cos it never failed to start being a CRDI.when i eventualy got around to it,it turned out  the main glow plug fuse had blown.(its located in the left hand side of the engine compartment fuse box).Never heard of one of these  blowing with out a reson.could not find a fault with any circuit or glow plug so i have put it down to me being a smoker and i often turn the ignition on and off to allow the window to close/open. fuse cost 7euro +vat.its  also not the handiest fuse to change. it has now been 3 weeks and no problem.so now only flick the ignition for a split second.
hope this helps

Having been trained to drive a Diesel by the military so long ago, I still wait for the glowplug indication to go out, despite many telling me it's not necessary.

Interesting point,I've never really looked for a glow plug light In either Bruce or Cyril,I know all the modern trucks don't have em anymore, you just do your pre check(and yes I do it every morning on my cars to)oil, coolant. belts, crank it and check all the lights and bugger off,I know a crap load of dash lights come on when you first turn the key on,but as long as they all go out, once I have checked everything I'm not that fussed.

Hello hello to all i30 Members

Here is an update on the "white smoke" phenomenon.

It appears two of the four glow plugs had in fact failed, (no idea whether they are NGK or Bosch make).

I do hope our i30 will be looked after by the service centre, and returned unharmed (and unmarked bodywork wise).

Well, thats all for now.

Kindest regards

Rogmur :)

Hi to everyone

Apologies for not getting back sooner.
Well, we have had our i30 back since last Saturday 23rd, and immediately we could tell the difference when
driving along the Motorway, our car felt just like new.
I am uncertain what test the service centre performed, but assured that two of the glow plugs were replaced.
Now having had our pride and joy back for a couple of days, the cold mornings do not effect the car and no white smoke
(thankfully).
The cars performance appears objectively better than before we took it to the service centre last week.

Hopefully all will be well.

Kind regards to you all

Rogmur ;)

THe glow plugs should not make any difference at all once the engine is warm?? They are not really used to keep the engine ticking over?....

PS... My Hyundai mechanic told me they could not find anything wrong with mine today... i hopew that is a good thing haha

Picked my car up today.... They said that the glow plugs are fine... (they checked using diagnostics... i know, they could have done more but meh).  They said that smoke on start up can be poor fuel... I use Woolworths Caltex. He said that woolworths fuel (diesel i use) isnt as high a quality... THoughts... back to BP? haha

Don't you hate the way they are always looking for an out ... I doubt there is much difference in the fuels  :fum:

I personally don't use Woolworth's diesel.  I use Caltex Vortex and don't have any problems with it.  My wife filled our old Jackaroo at the Woolworth's one day and the car ran poorly.  I put it down to the low volume that Woolie's diesel sells, therefore it sits in the underground tanks for longer.

Try BP again and see if it improves, or even try the Vortex.

Aren't they one and the same?

Woolworth's here in Tassie don't sell the Vortex Diesel.  I think the main thing is the low turnover of diesel that Woolies have (down here at Huonville at least).

We have a Caltex here which uses the Woolies dockets although it's not fitted out as a woolies servo. I can buy the vortex and because you can use the discounts from woolies, my logic tells me the diesel would always be fresher than a station that does not offer discounts.
