First ride for 2019.
Temp a very high 6C, sunny and no wind.
Just a short ride to get the legs moving.
Few photo's.

I am preparing for the Fleche Opperman all day trial at present which requires covering 180km in less than 14 hours. At present daytime temps are in the mid 30's so this means riding in the middle of the day which sucks the life from the legs.

Yeah, I went there. (https://www.relive.cc/view/g31335558022)

I've run the course in two parts this week with pictures below from the more scenic ride into the city and river loop through the fancy suburbs near the river.

(https://i.ibb.co/hHw8tGG/Screen-Shot1298.jpg) (https://imgbb.com/)

The route of 107km. Into the city and beyond, mostly on bikepaths.

The city facing east from the Kurilpa bridge.

The end of the road at Long Pocket.

St Lucy's at the uni from whence the great adventure begins and ends.

The Defy at rest.

I got hungry at one point. I never normally eat this rubbish.

No batteries yet and I'm still working on fitness after the health issue a while back. Some of the Audax riders do cover a lot of kms though, one fellow did more than 25000km last season.

Here's a little something...

This is Bling. I'm not sure if I've mentioned this bike before, its 35 years young and quite the eye catcher. It's the superbike of its day, old school awesome and rocking the latest drivetrain and wheel tech. It goes very well indeed.

Beast of a thing.

The oldies can't ve beaten for durability.

My Saracen is some 22 yo, originally bought for my son.

Still got original wheels had a couple of new spokes and a few new tyres.
Gear mechanism, brakes, sadle and paint work all as factory fitted.

When i started riding it a few years ago I changed the handle bar stem to produce a more upright riding postion due to aging back!

First Oppy this weekend. I'm still on the mend so did the short version, 180km although we managed a bit more than that in the end. It was hot, but not as hot as the time the rear tire exploded.

Photo's from my latest ride.  Enjoy.

Started some 15 miles up river from Liverpool by Widnes/Runcorn road/rail bridges on the River Mersey.

Rode back towards Liverpool via Hale mostly along the river bank as cycle tracks and footpaths have been constructed over the past few years.

I'd gone away for a few days recently to Northern New South Wales with the intent of riding the hills there. Owing to doctors orders I am not permitted to ride in the wet owing to blood thinners and potentially hemorrhaging at the side of the road should I slip and hit the deck. I'm OK with that and lets just not discuss the many other scenarious where this might occur, not involving wet roads.

I've taken the Defy with me and its recently been dismantled and rebuilt. The front brake has never been awesome and the mechanic found a cracked piston in the caliper. So I now have 2 new calipers as well as oversized rotors to aid the stopping. There are resin pads in there at the minute, I'll see how they go and if necessary I'll put metal pads back in. Metal pads work better at managing heat and fade fso for long descents, thats the business. I've also added a comfortable ergonomic saddle since the distances are going up significantly later in the year. So this is definitely the right bike to head to the hills with.

Well it rained for days didn't it. I managed to get out two times which is better than no times and thoroughly enjoyed the short hilly loop from the back of Wooyung to Pottsville. I'd been hoping for some long rides in the hills, I'll take what I can get.

I'll be back for sure at some point, its a great place for a ride.

One of my Brisso mates, same age as me, is part of a group which comes up most Wednesdays for a surf.
Two weeks ago he copped a board in the nose.
Having had three heart ops, he's on blood thinners.
Slashed across the bridge of the nose and bleeding from inside as well.
Eventually  the bleeding stopped and he went to his Doc that afternoon.
All good until two days later when his nose started bleeding again. He's now had two stays in hospital of several days each.

He's home now and appears  OK.

Might be a couple more weeks before he's back in the surf though.

In the early days of learning to live with blood thinners, I learned to shave more carefully since the slightest error created what looked like a crime scene. I ride far more conservatively too since I don't want to become an actual crime scene.

Been able to hit the trails almost every week this year (think i've only missed 3 weeks)
The local MTB trails at BomBom are very convenient to my work. Only 1min off the highway to the parking lot. I get in about an hour after work, normally around 12-15km through forest single trails.
Its been absolutely fantastic.

Ah Bom Bom SF.
Was a great early rally stage for any event organized by the local Car Club. Easy access for spectators.

View from Frodsham Hill looking from northeast to northwest - the Pennines, down the River Mersey towards Liverpool in the far distance, to the welsh hills. Latest bike ride was along  Llangollen Canal.
This is a spur of the Shropshire Union Canal.
Did the final 10 mile section from Chirk to Llangollen taking in Chirk Bank, Chirk Aqueduct, Chirk Tunnel (421m), Whitehouse Tunnel (174m), Pontcysylite Aqueduct, Horseshoe Falls, Chain Bridge and Llangollen.

Re the 2 tunnel. You can walk through the tunnels along the side of the canal.
No lights. You just walk hoping the rail between the canal and walkway isn't missing otherwise..... It's an early bath!

Out today on one of our longer rides.
Started at Prestatyn and rode the entire route off road along the sea wall for some 16 miles, 32 miles in total, to Rhos on Sea via Rhyl, Abergele, Pensarn, Llanddulas and Colwyn Bay.
Enjoy the photo's.

Some pics from some recent rides. Finished the Petit Opperman all day trial (180km), a 150km brevet and a couple of other longer rides. Up MT Mee twice recently, once in the dark on Bling and then up and over the top on the Defy.

I've accumulated the Brevets I need this season as a result.

You've met Bling. Now meet his brother Frank, a mid 80's Rossin Professional. Frank is a fairly original  specimen and was the top end road bike of the day. He's currently getting some new wheels, tires and gearing appropriate for vintage steel bike events. I'm planning to ride Frank a lot, but using the original drivetrain on modern wheels that handle and stop properly.

Nice, as long as she doesn't end up like that 20 year old broom on "Fools and Horses" that had 3 new heads and 4 new handles...  :snigger:

These are genuinely hand made bikes and the detail extends to the frame and paint. Its worn, but remains a beautiful thing. They really do need to be used rather than parked and admired.

Out and about today around Chester/Cheshire countryside/Welsh border area.

We linked 3 previous ride routes but when we got to Saltney Ferry footbridge on the River Dee we decided to take a chance on the Wales Border patrol as we didn't have our passports, so crossed the river into Wales.

Manged to dodge the patrols and headed back into England for our lunch at Chesters no. 1 chippy.

Few photo's to enjoy.

Out yesterday and rode the Tissington Trail and the Maniford Track in the Peak District.

Great views.

Came across Thors cave.

Also, check out the antisocial order plaque on the entrance to the disused railway tunnel now part of the Manifold track cycle way.

There's been less cycling than I'd hoped this year owing to a range of reasons, but mostly poor health. Nothing major, just colds and flu, but persistent.

As a result I didn't make it to the Noosa Strade Bianche, nor the Moreton Bay 100., two events I'd signed up for. The amount of Audax riding was minimal, but what occurred was excellent quality. And long hours at work meant there was a lot of sleeping in rather than rising early to go for a spin.  And sadly, Taupo in New Zealand is out also for 2019.

And so I've set out some goals for next year, and a little further out as well. Next year the focus will be on gravel and vintage events. Maybe more Audax on vintage bikes. To this end Frank is about to be upgraded since I broke a crank, and the opportunity presents itself to add some additional gears and fix a few things that needed attention. NSB will be in the list for 2020 of course.

Longer term is l'eroica in Italy, that's got to happen, it looks like an epic weekend.  But there's some work to do beforehand.

In other news I've acquired a better camera to keep up with Lester, a Sony RX100 M2. Light, good image quality and excellent battery life. All I need to do is get out and use it.

Frank's cracked crank - it is 35 years old.

Started at Burton Marsh and cycled to Hawarden Bridge to cross the River Dee then followed the river down to Flint.

Well it took longer than a week but its done. This bike has been built/modified with historic events in mind so it needs to adhere to the guidelines for these events, steel frame up 1986, downtube shifters, brake cables not faired in, maintain its historic appearance. Some liberties have been taken with the drivetrain, long cage on a super record derailleur (possibly the only one on the planet), gears from 11 to 30 at the back, triple crankset. I have all the gears now. I just need to learn to operate it properly.

Finger error sorted now. Thanks for the catch. Yeah, there's a fair bit going on here. I'm especially conscious of safety these days. No one needs a mechanical out on the road, and especially at speed.

Rides nicely and goes almost anywhere. Hopefully I've now broken and replaced everything that was on the way out.

It's getting too hot to ride too far at this time of year now. It's up around 30 by 0800 with stupendous humidity and out in the hills there is no breeze to take the edge off. After Easter next year when it starts to cool off again there should be more longer rides and tales from the road with Frank.
