There are 4 main breakdown cover services in the UK

The What Car magazine asked all of them to provide a list of which brands they were called out to in 2017. The combined result was a s follows.
Which brands broke down most often?

Brand   % of cars that broke down
30. Land Rover   14.2%
29. Citroën   13.3%
28. Jeep            12.5%
27. Nissan           11.4%
26. Fiat           11.2%
25. Vauxhall   11.1%
24. Porsche   10.0%
23. Renault   9.7%
22. Mini           8.3%
21. Alfa Romeo   8.2%
20. Peugeot   8.0%
19. Ford           8.0%
18. Honda           7.8%
17. Volkswagen   7.1%
16. Mercedes   7.0%
15. Volvo           6.8%
14.Mitsubishi   6.5%
13. Audi           6.5%
12. Jaguar           6.3%
11. Subaru   6.1%
10. Mazda           6.1%
9. Seat           5.8%
8. BMW           5.8%
7. Skoda           5.2%
6. Toyota           5.0%
5. Kia           4.8%
4. Hyundai    4.8%
3. Lexus           3.2%
2. Suzuki      3.0%
1. Dacia           2.5%

We have had people on the forum swearing to buy a VW because of a niggling problem with their i30. If so – based on these figures - they run the risk of significantly increasing their exposure to a breakdown.

Dacia the lowest.
Maybe when they break down they just walk away and leave the car by the roadside.  :happydance:

Interesting results, but do you some sort of strange Imperial "percentage" in the UK?    The results don't add up to 100.

Sort of causes serious damage to the survey's credibility don't it?  :crazy1:

I would imagine there are very many that are just above 0.0% which could make the total 400%

Brands like Daimler, Rolls Royce and Lada :snigger:

So is it call outs or breakdowns ? And is running out of fuel included? Either way, I don’t think the information is worth much. The percentages should relate to the number of registered vehicles per manufacturer. There are many more Land Rovers and Volkswagens on the road in the UK than Hyundais and Dacias. And Bentley doesn’t feature - surely they aren’t worse than 30th.

But that assumes Land Rover, Citroen, Jeep, Nissan, Fiat etc are the top sellers in the UK.
I doubt that is the case.

We need @AlanHo to come back with more information.

When you take out breakdown insurance - you register the brand and model with the insurers.

The statistics are the number of breakdowns, (excluding tyres and running out of fuel) expressed as a percentage of the number of registered cars by brand.

The main weakness is that it does not discriminate by age of car or multiple call outs by one customer who does no maintenance on a clapped out knacker.

Hence if there are 100,000 cars of a certain brand registered with a breakdown service - and 5000 suffered a breakdown in 2017 - it would be calculated as 5.00 %

Dacia are a new brand in the UK and made from crappy French Renault rubbish. there are few registered and most are still under warranty which skews their results.
