Hi guys,

I brought a second-hand 2012 i30 Elite with 1.8lt petrol and it seems to me that it eats more petrol than it should. On a full tank I can travel 430kms before it tells me to top up, with a reading of 9.3km/100.

60% city and 40% motoway.

Is this normal?

Unfortunately they are quite thirsty (The diesel is quite a bit better) Both seem to suffer from a fairly inefficient auto transmission (not one of Hyundai's strong points)

The newer GDi 1.6 petrol is a less thirsty motor and the new double clutch transmission used in the diesel seems to be a good thing.

If you are about to commence a longer journey, you can brim the tank and perhaps increase your range by a good 100 kms or so.

As a matter of interest, what is the reported average speed of your driving when you fill up. Naturally, the type of driving and your style will affect the l/100k figure. Cold starts / short trips are a killer to economy, as is idling in heavy traffic. 80 kmh on the open road is where you will achieve your best consumption, but traffic conditions usually require a higher speed so as not to impede other road users.

When in slow-and-steady flat-as-a-pan Adelaide, my average was just 40kph between fills. Oh, and did I mention 4.1 lphkm?
Since getting to Melbourne my driving is Sunday only or interstate highway, so no longer consistent or indicative.

My 2013 1.8 litre auto has just turned over 30000 klms.

Currently showing 6.9 ltres per 100 klms.  Came down from 7.1 at 20000 klms.

Shortest drive is 25 klm into town, rest is highway driving at 100 kph.

That sort of driving gives you almost optimum economy for the 1.8 petrol

Ok guys an update.

I have checked with 3 other i30 auto 1.8lr owners (2012/2013) and they all are getting between 7-7.3/100km.

They mainly drive in the city and suburb area, which is close to the combined figure of 6.9.

What are you guys getting?

While not directly relevant - my 2010 i30cw (i.e. FD body not GD body) which is a 2.0 gives around 9.2 - 9.9 L/100km (sometimes higher if getting stuck in traffic repeatedly).

I do drive with the A/C almost constantly on; and with my low-beams on as DRLs (not sure how much that really would effect things fuel consumption wise... obviously it will have some impact but it may be negligible).

Whilst I don't rev the crap of out my engine taking off nor just stop in the nick of time - I tend to take off quite quickly and brake reasonably strongly (decelerate quickly) - which I am sure doesn't help my fuel consumption.

Also, often overlooked, the weight of occupant(s) can effect consumption - as well as weight of other contents (less overlooked)
