I have not used Castrol oil for years now. When I had my Toyotas, I was warned by mechanics that Castrol oils encourage sludging, particularly in Toyota heads. Recently, my workmate (who used to own his own engine rebuild and tuning business) confirmed this to be true.
What is your opinion on their oils? I won't be using them in the i30 despite Hyundai's recommendation.

I'm happy using Castrol in my i30......

As far as sludge goes, I guess I'll find out some time down the track...

Any discussions on the subject of oils usually results in a mass debate.
This will be interesting.  :)

You can check by looking at the inside of the oil cap after about 10,000km.

BP is Castrol's parent. http://www.bp.com/sectiongenericarticle.do?categoryId=180&contentId=2000584

We also make and market BP and Castrol lubricants. Castrol is one of Australia’s market leaders providing world-class quality lubricants for the local market.

I doubt they make an inferior product. It has been my experience lubricant manufacturers do make products at different price points presumably due to the quality or application. It possible if people are using a cheaper and/or unsuitable lubricant problems may occur. Caveat emptor.

I'm certainly not calling it inferior. I'm just going on the warnings given to me by mechanics about using Castrol in some specific models. Castrol is a good product for many engines.

I have fixed price servicing on my Toyota up to and including the 75k service so it gets whatever they give it .. I have been using Castrol in the Wifes Petrol CW .

She only does about 8k per year so I have enough oil for the next 3 years in storage 2 x Castrol Titanium and 1 x Shell Ultra :-)

one word of warning on castrol oils, don't use magnatech in your petrol i30,it rattles something fierce on cold start up for at least 3Min's,i know this from experience.  :scared: :faint: :fum:  Hyundai recommend shell oils in Australia.

Been using it since the first service and have covered 40 plus thousand k's since then and there's no sign of sludge.  :)

There is always some truth in a rumour but with such broad statements it's too easy to imagine your own truth. Every oil company makes a wide range of oil so before you could reach your opinion you needed to ask: Which Castrol oil?; Was it so long ago that it has no relevance to any current oils and more importantly any that would be suitable for your i30?

I have used Castrol oils based on the best information and specifications I can get. I have no reason to suspect I chose poorly.

When I had my '83 Commodore engine rebuilt, the mechanic recommended Castrol because "it's as good as the specialty oils and you can get it cheap at the supermarket". That was a long time ago and I suspect specs and expectations have changed anyway.

Many years ago I used Castrol and although a good oil, I felt the engine was noisier than with the old oil I'd just changed. Never used it since.

I've no problem with Castrol oils. Been using them since my rallying days.
Quite a few years ago now, Valvoline used to supply a sort of "basic" oil in bulk to workshops. I guess in the late 70's to early 80's. When it got hot, if you did a panic braking manouvre, the oil light used to flicker.

Dunno about other Castrol oils but I reckon rxsuper wreaks of awesomeness, just probably not in an I30

Pip
...is it magnatech pip?
No. There are many oils suitable but I agree this is not even close to one of them. It's just cheap shit with fancy advertising. Advertising sells more oils than good oil sells itself.

Very few people really understand what makes a good oil, including myself, so advertising helps us to buy the right best margin one. :whistler:

I was warned by mechanics that Castrol oils encourage sludging,

Doesn't this depend on the thickness, viscosity, of the oil, engine temp and the use of the car.

I've done 32.000 km (from 142.00 to 174.000 km) on Castrol Edge 5W/30 in my CRDi and the oil cap is clean as new on the inside.

Last oilchange, about 4.000 km ago, I put on Shell Helix Ultra Extra 5W/30 just to see if it would make any change in enginesound or fuel consumption. No change at all.

Until 5 years ago I worked as a servicemanager at a VW/Skoda dealer for 9 years. We only used Castrol oils.

I can't recognise the problem.

Thanks Jim!!
Wow, that's convincing. Who said it wasn't good.

Sorry, far from convinced.

100 mph  for 300 miles,,,, twice. What cr@p. The engine temp alone would eliminate sludge. Past 50 mph, wind resistance becomes a significant  force to be overcome and fuel consumption skyrockets, increasing engine temp.

Let's see the guy do the same distance in UK, snowing @ 30 mph, then inspect the engine.  :fum:

Not having a go Rusty, but even that one averages out to 40k miles pa, so definitely a warm engine there as well. Sludge is a result of water & oil mixing repeatedly over a long period, so it will vary car to car.

BTW, I'm not anti Castrol, other brands probably would sludge, given the correct conditions too.

I am using shell oils ( HX7 or ultra)......

My thinking is........why use oil which brand exist only because of (good) marketing? I am rather using brands which have their own wells ( Shell, BP, AGIP, Mobil1-Esso...)
@ castrol you are only buying well marketed brand......so you pay extra price for their marketing, plus because castrol doesn`t have their own wells.....so it must be buying oil stock from Shell, BP, AGIP, Mobil1-Esso...

Moreover......I don`t have good memories on castrol GTX 10w40....when i30 CRDi had only 20.000km they put GTX @ Hy dealer.....oil consumption was 0,5L/20.000km

Now with shell ultra @ 105.000km......none!
