A Samsung smartphone advertised as being water-resistant has failed a water immersion test by a leading product review site.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 Active stopped working after being put in a tank that simulated the effect of being about 5ft (1.5m) underwater.

Consumer Reports repeated its test on a second model, which was also damaged.

I've got an S7 Edge which I bought because of the camera. I don't think I'll try testing mine.

Can't see me dropping it in loo, bath or sink by accident. :)

My Samsung S2 is 5 years old now, handmedown (handmeup?) from my daughter when she upgraded to an S5. It has a cracked screen from when some rushing woman on the airfield in the Tiwis knocked it out of her hand. The screen cover held it together and it's hardly noticeable.

I know a guy in northern NSW who has dumped 2 in the ocean (keen fisherman ad surfer). Dried the ffirst one out in a bag of rice on top of the TV ad it wet for another year or so then he upgraded. And did it all again. Still going. The last might be an S4.
Al that aside, I don't know what Samsungs claims are but 5 feet of water is a long way down. Dropping it in the sink or toilet or getting saturated in a storm wouldn't produce that much pressure.

Not sure about the Samsung but the Moto G is good for 1 metre and 30 minutes duration...  :)

Reminds me of the old warranty joke: 10 minutes or 10 metres, whichever comes first.

New Moto G4 Plus looks very appealing to me for $399 - Dual Sim, 5.5" HD screen, up to 128GB with SD, finger print sensor and 16MP camera.  I really don't have the appetite to spend $1500 for a 128GB iPhone these days.

I think the days of $1000+ smartphones are hopefully coming to an end, as people now see these as a commodity and they all do a reasonable job.  I just wish I can find an easy way to handle Android alongside my other Apple products and 180GB of my music with OCD levels of artwork and playlists on iTunes -- sigh!!

I see they've done away with the "water resistance" of the previous model...  :undecided:

I can't see myself upgrading in a hurry as my G3 does what I want, has a decent screen size without being too big for my pocket and the camera is a quite reasonable 13mp.

It also has 16gb internal storage and, if I really needed it, it will also run a 64gb micro sd card.

Me thinks it was a bargain at $260...  :D

I don't upgrade phones until they die/stop running apps i like.

The Moto is Fast and the battery life goes on forever.
