Hi all!
I live in Sydney and am the proud owner of a 2009 auto cdri SLX, Love the car and the drive!  Lately my ESP off light has been turning on and i have loss of power when this occurs, when i switch car off and start again it is normal. Checked tyre pressure and all is good. Then it happened again and the engine light has come on??(and stayed on) I see this as a safety issue especially as my pregnant wife will be the sole driver when baby comes. I am due for a 45000k service and dont want to be ripped off, so in addition to this introduction... I was hoping i could see if anyone has any info on this problem so i am not so blind going in and if anyone could recommend a trustworthy place to have my car serviced and fixed?

Hi bongo, and welcome to this great forum.

A 2009, isn't there still warranty on that one..?

ESP issues have been discussed here now and then, it could be the switch for the stoplight. Have you seen if the stoplights are on constantly..

If not, try the search option in the top of the page.

Welcome Bongo, as Asterix says a faulty stoplight switch is probably the cause (and hopefully you still have warranty to get it sorted)  :sweating: (although it should not be an expensive fix either way)

Hi Bongo, a similar thing happened with my car. Fixed under warranty off course. Hey there Dazz, you're on the money as usual M8, although I could have sworn the service guy said the problem was just a faulty stop light bulb itself. Either way I couldn't detect a drop in power and the check engine light didn't come on in my case. Bongo Just make sure you service the car with Hyundai for warranty issues like this.

Damn!!! It has happened again....! Two freakin days it took! I am remaining patient and positive. I have booked in again at Hyundai. This time I put it in drive and ESP off light came on and engine light and the revs felt rather high. What is happening???? Am due to install new baby seat on Friday but if this continues there is no way I'll have my wife and newborn driving around. Fingers crossed, and I'll keep you posted. :(

According to the weekly produced Auto Express motoring magazine here in the UK, an inability to diagnose & fix faults with their cars is the biggest source of Customer dis-satisfaction. I totally get that... maybe they are all becoming just a little too dependent on "the computer diagnostics" and good old common sense, skill & logic are dying out in the Auto industry?

Example... 2 garages could not diagnose the reason for the EML being illuminated on the dash of a relatives 2001 1.6 petrol Mitsubishi Colt.

Both had run it on diagnostics... it doesnt use OBD2 but a system called MUT.

To be fair niether garage charged me... and niether were Mitsubishi agents... BUT...

All I did was checked the heater voltages were present at the o2 sensor in the exhaust manifold, and they were. So I checked the resistance of the heating element in the o2 sensor and I was expecting about 6 ohms... I got a higher resistance than I did through my body! So I spent £80 on a new o2 sensor after speaking with Gendan.
Fitted it in 5 mins and off went the EML...

Why cant garages do that stuff any more?

@Ffoxy,

Good one  :goodjob2:

I replaced the O2 on my Mitsubishi Magna years ago. No way the old one was coming out. Had to take it to garage, they used oxy to heat surrounding area and removed it. How come you're so lucky  :Pout:

It didnt look like the original sensor, on the Colt Forums its obvious these things fail a LOT so chances are its only been in there a few years rather than the life of the car. Plus I ordered a special tool for removing them for £10!

Sounds like money well spent.  :goodjob2: Apparently, they only have a life of about 60k. My car had a persistent intermittent miss at high speed, was low kms but I and auto rlrctricians could never find the problem. Changing the o2 sensor made no difference at all  :(. I traded it on our current i30  :D

Becuase of the loss of power at the same time this rules out stoplight switch, bulb and tyre pressure issues. The problem is almost certainly a faulty engine sensor and the ESP-off light is merely a cursory warning. The primary issue should be disagnosed from the fault code present when the ECU warning light comes on, indicating which sensor is failing.  If you have a scangauge or any cheap ODB device you can probably diagnose this yourself with the help of the list of codes on the Hyndai service website.

That's the EPS (electronic power steering) light rather than ESP.

Same problem here in Australia, WHen you take your car in for a problem they will immediately plug in to the ECU scanning tool...And start from there looking at the fault codes that show up!

Mind you they will charge you around $50 just to clear the fault code (This is out of warranty of course).
I had a VZ Commodore (A GM product for the UK people) and was the worst vehicle I ever owned.
Must have been designed by monkeys or something as I had 2 pages full of problems (spending thousands in the process).

One of the major issues was mutliple misfiring on 2-3 cylinders.....

I was charged for Spark plugs, Coil packs, manifold gaskets and all sorts of other parts but the misfiring went on and on.
I must have taken the car to a numerous service centres (garages) and all mechanics would consult
the scanning tool as first point of contact with the car and go by that which of course never solved anything.

No common sense or no real understanding of the ins-and-outs of the vehicle. I even took it to a performance specialist
once that was recommended to me by a friend and he was the worst out of all of them!!
