Those wheels look as though they were designed to take weights in that position. There's an obvious rim to fit the weights over.

If the wheels had a flatter edge/rim then they would have had to use the glued weight option on the inside of the wheel.

I hope i don't get those wheels  :scared: , i'll certainly complain if i do

Thanks for the Photos Lester, Very surprising! Trish's alloys on her Tourer don't have that lip or any visible weights.

Lester,

A bit of this (or equivalent) wouldn't do any harm  :snigger:

Lester,

In Lester's defence he does a lot of miles (about 20 a week?)  :whistler:

Mind you, the wheels on Trish's tourer which are similar get a lot of brake dust on them too (more than any other car I can remember - and I've had a lot!)

Why couldn't they have put a weight fixing rim on the inside of the wheel, or at least somewhere the weights wouldn't be seen? It's madness that they seem to have designed the wheel to take weights like that.

I think I'm one of the only people in the world that thinks steel wheels + plastic covers are better.

They have to put the weights in the spot that balances the wheel.

Steel rims are heavier than alloys and therefore any car with steel & wheel trim combination is at a weight disadvantage to an alloy wheel car.

I don't care where the weights go, as long as the wheel is balanced correctly.

I would be very disappointed if I bought a new car and the weights was placed on the outside of the rim.... :disapp:

As I said earlier, if you use stick on weights on the outside of the rim, the weights aren't in the exact spot the balance machine wants them. Moving them in even a little bit means you need more weight to get the same effect and they may also not be in quite the right place.

Sure you can have the good look but possibly at the cost of proper balance.

My after market wheels have no lip on the outside so need stick-ons, but because they are only 15" and only marginally wider than standard, it's not a big issue. The bigger the diameter and wider the rim, the bigger potential for error.

Question: what do you folks think of buying ex-hire cars? A LOT of i30s are ex rentals from the big names. Under a year old with around 10k mileage.

I've dropped the idea of buying an Auris, I just can't ignore that feeling of love at first sight with the i30

I personally would not but again I might if price was right....given there is still 4 years warranty or it might not be 4 years....

You would have to find out if the warranty would still be valid for the remaining period and whether it would be classed as a business or private warranty.

Also, besides not knowing how it has been driven and whether it has damage.
You can see the body work but not the underneath.

If you did find one it will be worth paying for inspection by RAC or AA or independant motor inspector.

we boughtba Corolla ex hire car in Sydney in 2006. It was a year old and had less than 20k on the clock.
we traded it last year and it was in such good condition the Toyota dealr put it on it's on lot instead of wholesaling it on as they would normally do with a car of that age.
it never gave a moment's trouble in almost 9 years.
But we were probably lucky.

I consider buying an ex-renter a real gamble (with winners like Trevor) but many losers too...

You would need to do what Lester said and save some good money over a one owner personal vehicle as well...

Thanks folks, I actually came across a couple on Hyundai forecourts and they were priced exactly the same as privately owned vehicles. Only the car supermarkets discount them to reflect their history. Advertised as "one owner" I only found out when I asked to see the V5... and realised "EVRS Ltd." was Enterprise.

The inspection sounds like a great idea so I'll look into that. Looks like the comprehensive inspection is £150ish but it's very thorough and is nothing on the cost of a vehicle.

I don't know how they do it over there but here, at least one company has its own disposal yard. I. That's who we bought ours from and the price was certainly right.
Having a senior moment so I forget which company it was. Think it was Thrifty.

Would depend entirely on price. Ex rental should give you great bargaining power as the seller knows it is an unpopular concept.

A thorough mechanical investigation would be a requirement and the warranty would need to be investigated as previously mentioned. Check the body for accident damage and crabbing.

Remember, "Putty and paint, can make the devil a saint."
