It's always amazed me how they get away with having them on the road,if you run straight through pipes on any other vehicle it would be defected

I know for a fact that there are loads of Harley dealers with shed loads of original, factory pipes which you can pick up for a few bucks as a replacement silencer.

Most Harley riders (at least in NL and USA) get louder pipes fitted for that ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC Harley growl.  :goodjob:

The reason for loud pipes is mainly down to sound, looks and performance.

Out the box a Harley is so quiet it sounds immasculated. Also, the performance offered is poor due to strangulation as a result of emissions etc and therefore the need  to let it breath a bit better means dyno jetting and a better pipe........which usually means a bit more "music".

Of course in UK the annual vehicle test doesnt require bikes to have db tests. Its down to the tester to determine if its too loud. Finding a testers who is a wee bit 'mutton' helps

They do get defected, trouble is they just slap the standard pipes back on, have it retested and then go back to the straight through pipes...  :fum:  :head_butt:
