Title: Oil catch can?
Post by: hneel on May 18, 2016, 17:58:34
Who has exprerience with installing an oil catch can?

A time ago I looked inside the air throttle and it looked like this:

That tells me 2 things: first, to close the EGR. This has been done now by modifying the software.
But it's not just soot, it's sludge. And there were also traces of oil in the rubber hose before the throttle. So I guess it would be better to have an oil catch can too.

Who has done it? Is it difficult to install? What are the (estimated) costs?

Hi there,

Yes correct, I've put a catch can arrangement on my last two i30's.  I've monitored the exact amount of oil collected and for my 2.0l NU, I got 98ml per 10,000km.

Here's a video I made on the install. I still want to put a large can In place of this one but haven't got around to it yet. This is still very effective.

Enjoy 🙂

Just to be sure: it should be placed between the 2 circles on the picture, right?

Yes that looks to be the case. I'm not familiar with that engine but the principle remains the same. Are there two pipes venting from the tappet cover or just that one?
