Title: Steering Knock
Post by: Divv on December 07, 2022, 23:41:31
Hi gang,

i have a 2013 GD i30 which has just recently been diagnosed with the electronic steering wheel coupling which has perished.

Any ideas if i can somehow claim this under warranty? How much its gonna cost?

Dealership 1 quoted me $610 even though I know 99% of that is labour.

I have tried a few mechanics and tried a few others but not sure what to do now.

Any ideas?

Should i push the dealership to do it. Its just a lot of money for something that they should fix without me paying ya know.

Cheers,

Divv

Hi there Divv
Have you searched for the most common problem with steering wheel video?
Sometimes it has to do with the star shaped bearing inside the electronic motor of the steering power underneath the steeringwheel.

If that is not the issue, you maybe can get a secondhand one on the scrapyard.
I know in the Netherlands there is a company that refurbishes steering wheel systems.

Any help? Hope so.

With the age of your car, forget trying to get the dealership to do it free.
Most decent mechanical workshops will have done a fewor suspension specialists like Jax or anyone who has distribution links with Fulcrum Suspension.
From memory, around $400 is more likely.

I had mine done earlier this year.  Was charged almost $500 from my local independent.  This should have been a Hyundai recall in my opinion given the nature of the problem and how widespread it is.

If you try to do it yourself make sure to lock the steering wheel as there are a few positioning sensors et al down the column and when you open the box where to rubber doodah is, making sure to get all the rubber crumbs before reassembly.
Good luck with that one  :fum:

Hey all - so I have just noticed this steering knock in my i30 this morning. Have seen a couple of comments on here about the fix, which is all good as I have a great mechanic - but is it safe to drive in the meantime? Thanks!

It's generally safe yes (the issue doesnt prevent the steering working in any way or reduce its effectiveness, it's largely a cosmetic/noise issue). I fixed mine myself (quite a fiddly job, 2 hours, but satisfying).
