Model ATR-72-600 took off and crashed into river in 2 minutes. This accident happened this morning near Taipei city. At the moment, 15 dead, and still 20 missing. Rescue is still continuing.
According to the report, the plane was purchased brand new in 2014. Black box recorded the pilot communication before crash "Mayday. Mayday. Engine flame out !"
Video was filmed by dash cam of a vehicle driving on the high way.

Saw a pic of that car the wing hit. Just sliced through the top of the windscreen. I don't know for sure but I reckon the occupants would have got a hell of a fright and a jolt but survived.

It will be interesting to see the results from the investigation.  There are reports that many people survived the crash, which is amazing in itself.

From my point of view, it looks as though the aircraft has stalled (aerodynamic stall, not engine stall) after the engine failure, possibly a miss handed emergency.  An engine failure in itself shouldn't be a problem, as the certification that the aircraft goes through (in this case, European) would ensure that the aircraft can safely fly on one engine at all stages of flight.  In Australia it is called Performance Category 1 (for helicopters), which basically says means that at all stages of flight (including take off and landing) the aircraft should be able to fly away (meeting the minimum climb angle required) or land in the available distance post an engine failure.  It can also be referred to as Cat A performance in some countries.  Alan's son should be able to confirm this.

AFAIK, it was port side engine flame out at the worst possible moment. Looks like they were too slow to feather the airscrew and asymmetric forces pulled it down. Surprising really, because that's what pilots train for.  :Dunno:

Won't it be nice when all cars have cams fitted into the mirror. All nice and neat, no wires etc. Remember, I forecast it 1st.

Footage shown on American News slows it down to show the port engine feathered.  I'm not convinced at the moment, however modern turbo props auto feather on engine failure.

All I can say is WOW.
The 5sec of the first film I thought it looked fake.
I don't like the new trend of  just keep driving these days. Sure there was nothing they could do but I'd be hanging off the edge on the phone to authorities.

The latest information is that both the engines weren't providing power, and the pilots shut down the left hand engine when the right hand engine was the faulty one.

:link: BBC News - TransAsia GE235: Taiwan crash plane 'lost engine power'

It does look more like a mishandled emergency.

 :disapp:

You don't get a lot of time to think, which is why you go to Farnborough, to train for emergencies.

The record did show 25 seconds after taking off, the warning sound & signal was on, then pilot decrease the left hand engine power output and shut down. The reason that pilot shut down left engine is still unknown. Will need more effort(flight height, weather condition...) to figure out all the invisible details for the cause of accident.

This is never good. For some reason Taipei has a history of air crashes. Years ago when I went to Taipei, the flight crew stood in the aisle following the landing and bowed and the passengers applauded. Later I learned a similar aircraft had missed the runway and burst into flames the week before.
