Let me comment on that 80 km/h outlier... apparently, I was driving 80 km/h downhill there. At the moment, I haven't add any compensations for the uphill/downhill driving.

An interesting graph. I am surprised that the best economy is at about 80 kph - my 6 speed diesel seems to perform best cruising at about 100 kph in top gear.

I was always told that 80k's was the most efficient speed to travel at. Regardless of the car's streamlining, wind resistance starts to become a significant factor at higher speeds. Maybe some of our aeronautical members can provide some info on wind resistance vs speed.

As a youngster I was told that 50 - 55 mph (80 - 88 kph) was the most economical.

Aerodynamic drag increases exponentially with the increase in speed,   so increasing speed from 80kp to 100kph might only be 20 kph increase, the drag increase will be equivelant of 40kph. .

some 20 years ago I was told that when you´re driving 100km/h 70% of the power is used to overcome wind resistance.
Even though the cars are a lot more aerodynamic today, I don´t think that have changed a lot.

Thank fo the link. Most of my driving is on main roads with 85-90 km/h so that´s just fine according to the link.

I´ve only had this car since april this year, my average is 5,5l/100 km at normal driving.
Our sommervacation often goes to Crotia with our caravan, that´s 3500 km with the car fully loaded and 1400 kg caravan. When driving with the caravan the consumption is 9,3l/100km, so that destroys the overall average. 

How did you get the consumption data from your car..?

It is interesting that some European speed limits are much higher than in Australia. We have maximums of 100-110 KMH. Traveling on your freeways will obviously knock your fuel consumption around a bit.

@Asterix: I bought an OBD-II bluetooth dongle on D***Extreme and Android Torque application from the Android Market. This combination enables me to record selected sensor readings and export them to .csv file. I then import this file in Excel, calculate current consumption in l/100km, assign a speed bin to each record and use the pivot table to analyze the data. The result is shown on the graph in the first post.

At least we have 130kph limits on some of the Highways in the Northern Territory.....

That's the same as I have. Didn't realise it had connection LEDs until I used it on a mates car

It is good tho... especially when combined with Torque from the droid marketplace

I know I wrote that I drive 85-90 km/h on main roads, but I didn´t state that I did not exceed the speed limit 

On main roads speed limit is 80 km/h but most people drive faster. There is not very much police on the roads, so you will be very unlucky to get a ticket.

On motorways we can many places drive 130 km/h, some motorways have speed limits at 110 km/h, so yes, that does destroy the fuel economy

Today I noticed that the Torque application does not correctly calculate the diesel fuel consumption in low load conditions. There were no warnings about this in the application. Anyway, below 80km/h, I am sure that the fuel consumption is way lower than displayed in the graph. I'll be doing some comparative measurements between torque and on-board trip computer to see the true state... I'm kinda dissapointed...
