Alarm problem

Hey guys,

So I have a 2008 i30 cw and I'm having a weird issue with the alarm.

Sometimes and for no apparent reason the alarm just goes off.

When I unlock the car with the key fob remote control, the doors unlock but the alarm sound doesn't stop (if I'm not mistaken, unlocking the doors should stop the alarm immediately).

When it eventually stops and I lock the car again, all doors do lock but the indicator lights do not flash. If I unlock it they flash, if I lock it they don't.

I've asked Hyunday mechanics what it might be and they said I'd have to leave the car for a full electrical check. =/

Any leads on what might be causing this issue?

First check would be bonnet switch.
But your right in thinking it should turn off when unlocking with remote.

Thanks for the info.

English is not my first language so could you be a little more specific to what is the bonnet switch. Is it like a fuse box maybe?

Had that exact problem,you have described what one of my cars had to a tee

,It took four services of reporting the problem,last service I had done by Hyundai,they actually had a serviceman that had a few brains and looked further than the end of his nose

he located the problem,which was a chewed wire by either mice or Rats,can't exactly tell you which wire it was,but once replaced and a Rat Block bait was tied under the bonnet the issue never returned.
Not saying yours has been done by a Rat,but a broken wire is a very strong possibility.

Question for you Cruiser where do you find the bonnet switch,I have never found one on either of mine,as your point has been brought up before

There should also be a rubber in the bonnet that presses the switch. These fall out occasionally

Thanks Matey will have to have a better look next time I open the bonnet,took me driving 2,700 K's to find out I had a sixth gear in Bruce and then it had to be pointed out to me

So this is a picture of my car and if I'm not mistaken the bonnet switch is this:

Am I correct?

At first inspection it's looks just fine, I pressed it a few times and the rubber that presses it doesn't look worn out at all.

When I was leaving and locking the car, the indicators did not flash again (although the alarm didn't went off last night)... I turned around, opened the bonnet again and pressed the switch myself as I locked the car and lo and behold the indicators flashed !

So there's definitely something wrong with it.

I guess now it's a matter of replacing it and see if the problem persists or is fixed.

Any tips on where to buy the switch? Should I resort to my local dealership or ebay is fine?

Correct that is the switch.
You already did the test I was going to recommend. Holding the switch down and try locking car.
Did you check if the rubber is in the bonnet/hood?
The rubber presses down on the switch and if missing it will not press the switch.
If the rubber IS there I highly suspect it is not pressing switch far enough.
If this is the case then you should be push down on the bonnet/hood above where the switch is. Then try locking vehicle. Lights should flash.
If that works you need to raise the switch up to engage rubber fully. I usually drill the mounting bracket holes a size or two larger, I get enough adjustment from doing that.
You won't need to buy a new switch. Good luck.

I'm sure the rubber plunger in the bonnet itself can be adjusted "longer" by unscrewing slightly?

Not for the bonnet switch I'm pretty sure.

To test bonnet sensor.

Sit in the car with key and fob in hand.

Lock the car with fob.

After about 2 minutes place hand on bonnet release handle and pull to open bonnet.

The alarm should sound.

To stop alarm press door open on fob.

If that does not work put key in ignition and start car to stop alarm.

This will confirm if bonnet sensor works or not.

I should of added that by being in the car you can see if the flasher lights in the dash light up.

The rubber that touches the switch is there but it has a little crease in it that should be creating this issue.

It's not the screw type though. There are some rubbers with screw function on both sides though but not for this bonnet switch.

But you guys are right, I probably won't need to replace to switch as a bulkier rubber or an elevated switch should do the job making it switch as it's supposed to.

I think I'll try adding a bit of Sugru to the rubber when I have some time and see if that sorts it out.

In the meantime, I'll try to set off the alarm on purpose and see if the fob shuts it up this time.

EDIT: Oh and eye30 the dash light doesn't turn on when the outside indicators don't flash. It was the first thing I checked actually.

Sorry my mistake.

I've just checked mine and the red triangle for the hazard lights flashers when locking/unlocking.

I just tried to set off the alarm on purpose opening the bonnet from the inside after a few minutes of closing the car.

The alarm did went off and I successfully turned it of by unlocking the car from the fob!

It seems the issue was solved when I added some tape to the rubber on the bonnet to make bulkier!
