Title: Anyone replaced a roof bar fixing point?
Post by: mtber on February 25, 2019, 20:52:19
Hi there,

First post here so hi!

I had a bit of an (ahem) accident involving my bike on the roof of my 2013 i30 hatchback and a rather low entrance to a car park just recently. Big shout to the Thule roof bars that, whilst totally bent and written off, buckled and popped off the roof quite nicely considering, leaving just a couple of small cosmetic scratches in the roof and slightly bent brake levers on the bike.

Or so I thought. Turns out the front right fixing point has got bent out of shape and the threads stripped a bit as the roof bar got pulled out so it's now oval with very little thread left. Has anyone ever replaced a fixing point? Any pointers as to how to do it? I'm guessing from what I can see it'll require popping out interior panels to get at the underside of the fixing point to unscrew it but tbh I'm not really sure. It's dark here at the moment so no pics but can pop some up tomorrow if it would help.

Cheers!

You were lucky.
A couple of years ago my son did something similar with his CX3.

New roof panel required.
Plus new front wheel on bike and (I think), forks.

Good luck with the repair.
Be interesting to see how those fixing points come out.

Welcome, Sorry to hear that. Yes, relatively lucky. Every time I see a roof mounted bike I shudder. I would forget about it for sure!

Yes, pretty sure you have assumed correctly. Carefully pop the roof lining down in that area.

without seeing it, could it be straightened and either tapped out to a larger size or Helicoil repair?
