VW boss jailed for seven years in US over emissions scandal as legal action brews in UK over government cheerleading for diesel cars
Oliver Schmidt, 48, was convicted of concealing software used to cheat tests
Schmidt was the former general manager in charge of VW's environmental and engineering office in Michigan
UK lawyers said the government has to answer for promoting diesel cars
Law firm Harcus Sinclair said there is evidence that minister knew about the damaging impact of diesel emissions
