Hello forum members,

I want to check the oil level in the automatic transmission of our i30.
Now I know the dipstick has 2 indicators, 1st for "COLD" and the 2nd for "HOT".
Now it says in the manual that the engine should be at operating temperature and then go through all shift positions when stationary and then turn to "N" or "P" to check the oil level [with engine running].
My question is, do you have to go through all the gear positions with a "cold engine" before you start measuring [again with the engine running].
I don't see this in the manual.

Then probably nobody has ever checked his automatic gearbox oil level.
I do, but I keep wondering if I'm doing it right.

The manual mentions when checking cold it needs to be re-checked again when hot...might as well just check it when it's hot in the first place

I haven't had an auto for years but when I did it was always a hot level check after a 10 -15 minute drive.

I check the oil when the engine is warm.
But I would like to know why there is a cold part on the dipstick.

I suppose it can be used for a quick check, probably more benefit when doing a complete fluid change to get levels within limits before doing a final hot check.

Most of the automatics I've played with have only had the hot oil mark. That is the normal way to measure the oil amount. If that is ok, then all is good. As mentioned the cold mark is good if you change the oil yourself before drive. But I would do the final measurement with warm transmission.

Good thing hyundais have that stick. Many cars have only display on the service screen on the dash. For some mercs they sold conventional dipsticks aftermarket as there were no way for the user to check the oil level at all.
